I too had heard great things about The Book Thief and was thrilled when I found out the book club was reading it. Otherwise I don't know when I would have gotten around to reading it.

The Book Thief's another one I keep hearing great things about and want to read. Glad you liked it!

Anna- take Medellia's word for it - I haven't read the Book Thief yet - despite my immersion in YA lit. Been out of life w/ the "Mother of all Colds" for the last 3+ weeks. Unfortunately this was one of the very few times that Patty has caught a bug from me - she's usually much more ...

I like that idea of Finish your book at Work Day. I have been wanting to finish The Book Thief. I have just over 100 pages to finish the book and all I want to do is read it at work. I wish I had to take the train into work just so that I could have time to read my books. I miss those days ...

#100: I thought The Book Thief was substantially better than I Am the Messenger.

So Bob (32), you're the local Young Adult expert it seems. I read Zusak's I am The Messenger and really enjoyed it. Is The Book Thief as good and worth reading? I occasionally get into YA stuff, but not so much now that the kids are older and the real reader of the two has decided he likes ...

#46 The Book Thief Why did I read this? Not my cup of tea... can't think of whose cup of tea it would be but obviously some people liked it.

#99 The Book Thief By Markus Zusak

Jintster, I feel strangely pleased to hear that there's someone who didn't love The Book Thief. I haven't read it but have a copy at home that I've been afraid to start because of all the hype surrounding it. Quite often I don't feel about modern bestsellers the way others seem to and I ...

OK, that list was way too long! I've deleted it. If anyone wants the alphabetized list, tell me and I'll send it to you.

23) The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. A tremendous novel, and a thick, juicy, moving, thumping-good yarn of a story. It seems sort of ludicrous to classify it as a yong-adult novel, as the only thing young adult thing about it is the main character, Liesel Meminger, a German girl who defies H ...

>180: I was looking at reviews of that one after I finished The Book Thief, and I was kind of on the fence about it. I think you've just tipped the scales, though. To the wishlist pile it goes, although not right to the top of it. >181: I found Jacob the Liar really impressive; it's ...

From AHS-Wolfy's library I choose The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. @9: I'm with you! If it's inappropriate to choose a book that was already chosen, I'll pick Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

#17 The Book Thief by Markus Zusak Not too sure what to say about this one. It's a huge bestseller which is greatly loved if the reviews are anything to go by but it didn't really grab me. That's not to say there weren't plenty of good things in it. Several of the male characters are very ...

From DeltaQueen50's library I chose The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, it's already in my wishlist. Edit: Am I the only one in this thread with less than 200 books?

You know, I've yet to read The Book Thief -- thx for the reminder to grab it if I see it.

Since you like The Book Thief, you might want to give Zusak's I Am the Messenger a look, too. I am in the minority here on LT in preferring it to TBT, but either way, it is still a good read.

Hi There Brenda! I hope you are well. the Book Thief is an incredible book and, like you, it is one of my top ten for 2009.

52 The Book Thief Markus Zusak This book is filled with colours. Such a wonderful, beautiful book. I loved it, I loved an irreverent Death as the narrator, the incredible clever writing style, and the story, such an excellent story. This book will go in my top 10 for 09.

#14 The Book Thief by Markus Zusak Got this book when all the hoopla was going around about it. Finally chose it from my library...I was sad when the book ended.

The narrator (spoiler link - not that it's a huge secret) of The Book Thief is somewhat unreliable, in that he or she only releases information sporadically. This, of course, is the essence of good writing/narration.

I don't know Mila 18, but otherwise I agree with >57 jhedlund - The Book Thief, Corelli's Mandolin and Night are all great. This year City of Thieves by David Benioff was very good.

For me, Mila 18 - one of my all-time favorite books The Book Thief - became another favorite Corelli's Mandolin - I love stories told from a lesser known context, in this case a Greek island occupied by the Italians Night by Elie Wiesel - so horrifying I had to force myself to ...

I enjoyed The Book Thief, but I think you're right, it wasn't quite as great as everyone said it was. I enjoyed it, and I was fine with Death as the narrator. But it was lacking something, I'm not sure what. I think it was all the foreshadowing that sort of lessened the impact for me.

I have to second the recommendation for The Book Thief. It was a very moving novel. I also have to recommend two YA novels: Anne Frank and Me. This book is about a girl who gets "transported" to France during the Occupation and must go into hiding, much like Anne Frank. The Boy Who Dar ...

I loved I am the Messenger - not as good as The Book Thief but very engaging - and I loved Ed's character and how he came up with solutions to people's problem, especially buying ice cream for that mom! =)

Funny you should mention The Book Thief, Donna, because I read an interview with Markus Zusak once, where he said that he didn't set out to write an adult book or a young adult book, but just wrote what he wanted. I second The Book Thief, Dairy Queen, and The Hunger Games and will add Graceling by Kristin Cashore to this list.

I'm waiting for a friend of mine to get it at the local bookstore for me, we kinda did an exchange of books, he gets me The Book Thief and I give him The Gunslinger to keep it coz I didn't really like that one...But as soon as I get it I'll read it

... I am absolutely loving. I think I'll zip through it pretty quickly. Lots of good reading ahead for me - also will read The Book Thief this month for my F to F group read.

By far the best book I read last month was This Thing of Darkness, but I'd also rate The Book Thief very highly. I actually got quite lucky with the books I picked out for January, looking back I've rated most of them pretty highly.

I would love a discussion about The Book Thief. I'm in whenever it begins.

I've been reading Deathly Hallows and The Book of Lost Things lately. I'm probaby going to start rereading The Book Thief soon as well.

#13, The book thief by Markus Zusak. I had heard the praise for this book, but I must confess I felt a bit sceptical, there are thousands of books related to world war 2. All I can say is that this one is not like any of them, this book is truly unique.

Since you're enjoying The Book Thief, you may also want to consider reading I am the Messenger, another book by Zusak. Speak and Stargirl are great. The Book Thief is an amazing read, set during WWII and narrated by Death. Two newer ones that are topnotch are The Hunger Games and Graceling, the former an engrossing dystopia thriller, and the latter a well-written fantasy.

The Book Thief: OK, I'll admit it, I had a wet face at the end of it. But I'm so glad I read it.
