4. the Island of Dr. Moreau by H. G. Wells 5. Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse

Hi Eliza You were missed! It is good to see posts from you. Last month I started The Island of Dr. Moreau but didn't finish it before it had to go back to the library. I hope to obtain it again before 2009 ends. I'm adding Libra to my list. Thanks for your great description!

Hmmm. The Island of Dr Moreau is one of his that I haven't read - I shall add it to the list...

I started Dr. Moreau years ago and never got around to finishing it. I think it may be time to revisit it...

Glad you liked Dr. Moreau!!! Good to see you back. I didn't finish my Halloween books and had to rush through a bunch of ER books to write reviews!! Oh well, maybe I'll finish out the year with those and some other comfort reads. I've had a big classics year.

... in October): 60. The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells Tags: 1890s, sci-fi, fiction, U.K. Rating: ★★★1/2 Enjoyed this one much more than War of the Worlds , which I also read ...

10- The island of Dr. Moreau Interesting concept but the biology is *so* wrong, it kind of distracted me. The war of the worlds was much better imo. I don't know why, I kept thinking about Crake in Oryx and Crake while reading. 4/5

... my mean rating is 3.24! I guess that explains that 0.5 rating difference you talked about :) I had been planning to read The Island of Dr. Moreau for a few months, but Mac(blackdogbooks) convinced me to postpone it till Halloween, when we were discussing the Halloween Stack for the year and We ...

... well as I do or if I'm a little more generous in the stars I give. :-) Probably I'm too generous. I'm glad you enjoyed Dr. Moreau--it seems to have created quite a stir on LT this month--a lot of people read it for the Halloween Read.

41. The Island of Dr. Moreau - H. G. Wells 3.5/5

... Face out of the library, and will probably take a first look at it this evening if I get a chance. I took a look at Dr. Moreau but just decided I'm not in the mood for it. I will surely read it someday, but not right now.

Great reviews! I've read both, but now I want to go back and re-read Moreau...

... that in Australia, so could be interesting.) And I'm reading ghost stories, although none of them are 1001 books. (Well, The Island of Doctor Moreau was horror.) Best. Holiday. Ever.

Yep, looks like it's finally time to get round to reading The Island of Dr Moreau... Anyone who's read it recently might find a book I read recently, The Invention of Morel by Adolfo Bioy Casares interesting - it sounds as though it's nothing like as scary, but I do know that it was ...

... me want to re-read House of the Seven Gables again on a dark and stormy night with a big mug of hot cocoa. I loved The Island of Dr Moreau - did you see the movie they made of it? Not as good as the book, but not bad either.

I enjoyed The Island of Doctor Moreau, but it's rather over-the-top in its gothic horror. Which may be a Good Thing, I certainly rather like books of that ilk. :) After a bit of pfaffing about, I've now settled on A Confederacy of Dunces as the commute read, and The Graveyard Book as my ...

I think I'm going to have to break down and read Moreau, even if it has to be read via the computer/internet. It sounds too good to miss! Since I understand it's rather short, I guess it won't be too bad reading it from the computer screen . . .

BDB I definitely agree that Moreau has been the scariest read I've had this month! Great review of House of Seven Gables-- you really captured the essence and mood of the novel in a few choice words. Thumbs up! I think this may be my favorite read this month--it is so far. (I read Wo ...

... Stasia Eliza, I think we both found more to this book than we had expected! Stasia, I don't usually like "horror" and Moreau had more horror elements than the others I've read this month, but the moral and ethical issues made the book compelling reading so the horror elements didn't seem ...

With so many our our group who have recently read and recommended The Island of Dr. Moreau, I simply have to add it to the tbr pile. Thanks for your great reviews! Your thread is a great (but dangerous one.)

After all the glowing reviews here on LT, I really must give The Island of Dr. Moreau a try.

I'm adding The Island of Dr. Moreau to my wish list. Thanks, Tad!

passing by to thank you for including The Island of Dr. Moreau onto the Halloween read list - TadAd, MusicMom and myself all enjoyed it quite a lot and might not have read it otherwise. I still haven't posted a review though both Tad and MM have. Happy Halloween reading! Eliza

>214: Karen, I hope you enjoy Grand Obsession. About the Asperger's list: I just finished The Island of Dr. Moreau by Wells (and he studied under Thomas Huxley, or did you mean Aldous?) and my daughter is reading Andersen's tales to me. An interesting coincidence.

I just finished The Island of Dr. Moreau. I really enjoyed it...my favorite of Wells' books that I've read.

... books than the movie. Necessarily so, given how much is in the book! I officially gave up on Blindness so picked up The Island of Doctor Moreau at the bookshop at lunchtime yesterday. It's a slim volume, so am almost most of the way through it already. Good fun.

Book 102: Wells, H.G.: The Island of Dr. Moreau Science Fiction/Halloween (10/15/09) PL 133 pages H.G. Wells “scientific romances” have remained popular for over 100 years for a very good reason. They are exciting adventures that also give the reader something to think about ...

I finished The Island of Dr. Moreau last night--really enjoyed it! I'm posting my "review" on my 75 thread but I will wait to make comments here until others have a chance to read it. I'm reading Odd Thomas for my Koontz book--it was available at my library and Stasia said she thought I ...

... because I found myself pottering in the local bookshop at lunchtime. I bought, and have finished the first few chapters of, The Island of Doctor Moreau. I like Wells' spiffing Victorian adventures.

My public transport book was proving too bleak today (Jose Saramago's Blindness, a non-1001 book) so I just bought The Island of Doctor Moreau at lunchtime and got a few chapters into it. I rather like Wells' brand of spiffing Victorian adventures.

I finished The Island of Dr. Moreau and tried really hard to finish The House of the Seven Gables before I leave for vacation but I only got about halfway through. I'm off to NYC to, as my husband puts it, "buy about 900 books."

81. The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells. I believe this is the first Wells novel I've ever read and what a novel it is. It was like a see-saw for me. One the one hand, it's fast moving and full of action. If Wells had lived a century later he would have been right at home writing the ...

I've finished The Island of Dr. Moreau. I think this was my first Wells novel. I'll wait to comment until others have finished.

... bits as well as the story. I plan to read Woman in Black next because it is a library book and then I will start Dr. Moreau which I own. I usually like H.G. Wells in spite of his archaic style so I''m looking forward to that one. I'm not sure about Woman in Black--the reviews are ...

... ending. Despite my getting bogged down in the middle for a while, it is really a neat story. I think I'm going to skip The Island of Dr. Moreau, as I couldn't get it in unabridged book form, and I don't feel like reading off a computer screen. And there are other books I want to get to! I ...

I will plan to start Dr. Moreau over the weekend. I plan to be finished with Gables no later than Thursday night (more time to read now that my team's baseball season is over!) and hope to slip in Woman in Black Friday (my substitute for Woman in White. I'm looking for The Master and M ...

... reads I seem to have read quite a few, haven't I? I'm surprised at how many I'm familiar with. I'm looking forward to Dr. Moreau. I've read a lot of H.G. Wells and I enjoy him even if he is a little archaic. This is one I haven't read yet. I'm having so much fun that I'm already ...

Not sure how I managed it (brain fart, no doubt), but I read The Island of Dr. Moreau before The House of Seven Gables. Unimpressed with TIODM. I plan to get to The Wood Wife this weekend when I have a little more time to read.

32. The Island of Doctor Moreau by H. G. Wells. I read this on DailyLit.com for the Halloween read. I didn't really care for it that much. There was nothing that really compelled me to read on; it wasn't very frightening or mysterious; I really didn't care about anyone in the book. Oh ...

Yeah, we can do the Island of Dr. Moreau next, though the doc's already gone onto Ghost. He's quick, that one.

... get on with the rest of the scary stuff-I know it's there. Regardless, I enjoy Hawthorne's style. I'm having trouble with The Island of Dr. Moreau. I like the writing and the story is sinister, but the description of the treatment of animals is disturbing. I suppose if I'd seen the movie I ...

... but i think this one is going to be more fun! So far it has an appropriately spooky "back story" and atmosphere. I Dr. Moreau the next one after that? We are going out of town tomorrow for a long weekend and I want to take the next book just in case I get Hawthorne done before we get ...

... to read The Moonstone instead--but may not get to it until November. I'm going to read The House of Seven Gables and The Island of Dr. Moreau. I have a couple of my own choices I hope to get to, but I also have an ER book I got this month (from the August batch) that I must read and ...

I recently read a graphic novel version of Dracula that was really fun, quite faithful to Stoker. Finished The Island of Dr. Moreau. That was great. I was going to start House of the Seven Gables, but stumbled across Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. What a kick.

... to but a mysterious drunken poet named Edgar Allen Poe. A compelling and interesting read. YA. Good Halloween stuff! The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells. What a really great read. A psychological horror story equal to Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and, like Shelley's Frankenste ...

25. The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells This must be H.G. Wells month or something. I just finished my third book by the same author in the month of September. This time it was a classic Wells novel that, for some unknown reason, I had never read even though I've had it in my library.

The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells Bride of Fu Manchu by Sax Rohmer Cruisin' the Fossil Freeway by Kirk Johnson

Me too. I'm also juggling The House of the Seven Gables, Dracula, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde and Trick or Treat Murder. I've had to start my October reading early because I'll be away from home for much of the month.
