How could the Saint possibly resist the chance of a treasure hunt? When his sailing trip along the French coast is interrupted by gunfire and shouting, naturally he gets curious. The cause of the commotion is a group of men pursuing a young woman - and once Simon steps in to help the damsel in distress, he soon finds himself on the trail of a group of modern-day pirates - and searching for a huge amount of gold.… (more)

My first, and probably last, Simon Templar story. Charteris uses lots of big words and fancy phrases to tell a tale with lots of out-of-the-frying-pan-into-the-fire episodes which Templar survive due to a mixture of luck and cleverness. There is a trusty manservant with an nearly unintelligible accent and some pals from previous adventures who make a brief appearance. The biography of the author is more interesting than the story.
BTW, there is a Saint Club, founded by Charteris in 1936, which donated money to a London hospital until the NHS and now gives to other worthy causes. ( )

Adequate entertainment from the creator of this amiable con man. ( )

Another fun romp with everyone's favorite early 1900's swashbuckler! This time Templar falls hard for the girl. It's fun to read about early sea diving, too. Charteris' forward is insightful on this topic and the mechanism of writing about fantastic inventions in his day. ( )

First words
Simon Templar woke at the shout, when most men would probably have stirred uneasily in their sleep and gone on sleeping. It was distant enough for that, muffled by the multiple veils of white summer fog that laid their fine prints of mist on the portholes and filled the night with a cool dampness.
