This is a grim book, focused on the plight of immigrants to Sweden, particularly those from regions of conflict and conservative (Muslim) ideology. The crime is the late-night killing of three immigrants at a grocery, and police commissioner Michael Winter is once again Edwardson's focus -- but this is a grimmer, unhappier Winter who spends a lot of time in the immigrant housing projects, as if seeing them for the first time. The title is ironic, since many of the immigrants are living in cultural enclaves and not participating in the "best land" that is Sweden. Much of the book is taken up with Winter's search for a young boy who was biking around that night and was probably a witness; and Winter does finally solve the case, by discovering a predictable culprit and an unpredictable assistant to the crime. All in all, an unhappy, downbeat novel that offers no real solutions and not much hope for anyone. no reviews | add a review
Krimi. No library descriptions found. |
