I like this book for 3 reasons. First, this book contains an abundance of text features. It’s headings make sections clear for the reader and bolded words connected to the glossary at the end are helpful to readers when they come to a word that they do not already know. In addition, the combination of real photographs with captions and cartoon drawings with did you know facts is engaging for students and appeals to a wide range of students. Second, The book has two activities listed, one titled “What’s It Like to Have Dyslexia?” and the other titled “Word Tricks.” These activities are fun for readers to participate in and break up the text and information to apply or reflect on what was learned. Third, I like that this book addressed a variety of topics regarding dyslexia from information about the disability to how to get or offer help. The information is presented in a kind and appropriate way, and the book discusses the realities while putting an emphasis on the positives of having dyslexia. The only thing that I do not like about this book is that it does not use people first language, referring to people with dyslexia as “dyslexics.” Overall, the big idea of this book is to teach about dyslexia.
