I was impressed by how this book was written, it was funny and adventurous given the robust heroine who made everything right. Unfortunately, the guy didn't have a redeeming value, one would think he's getting better and he's getting out of his shell but one moment he'll shut everyone out.The heroine dominated the whole story and it evolved around her, how her character developed, the ups and downs, and all that jazz. I liked this book but the author could've done better with Hayden. He was too bitter and distant although reading along you'll know why, but until the last page I wasn't quite convinced of his turning on a new page of his life. His character should've been represented early on but because he remained a mystery save for the last few chapters, it was what kept me further reading it.There is mystery, a lot of drama with a bit of funny moments, mostly generated by Lottie but generally it's a good read. This is the first book I read from Teresa Medeiros and I'm looking forward to reading her other books.I hate to admit it but I remembered Liz Carlyle's "Beauty Like The Night" when I read this, because there were some similarities in circumstances. Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0060513640, Mass Market Paperback)

Proper decorum has never come easily to Carlotta Anne Fairleigh -- not even tonight, when the lovely, impetuous miss is finally making her debut. As she waits to make her entrance, she can't help wondering about the darkened house next door, the supposedly abandoned home of Hayden St. Clair, the man society has dubbed the "Murderous Marquess." Certainly one small peek through his window before the festivities would be harmless ...

And, naturally, this latest "adventure" ends in disaster, thoroughly compromising the budding debutante's reputation and leaving her suddenly, unthinkably ... betrothed! Soon she's en route to the wilds of Cornwall in the company of the handsome, mysterious marquess whose name the ton whisper with fear and loathing.

Yet there is something thrilling -- and surprisingly tender -- about her dark, unreachable groom, and the desire in his eyes is undeniable. But before Lottie will surrender to the yearnings in her heart, she must unlock the secrets of Hayden's past, no matter how scandalous -- or perilous -- they may be.
