Alan Bennett writes about his life in both books – these are his memoirs. He also muses and remarks throughout his diaries about events that have taken place. I love his writing style and enjoyed the opportunity to share his ‘take’ on events that we are all aware of. The chapter about his mother’s depression is written sensitively without being sentimental. He is able to articulate experiences that at the time created a lot of confusion for him with particular clarity. I haven’t finished Untold Stories yet – as good as it was I found after a while that I was missing reading a story with a plot. I will return to this. ( )
