This book is a good example of a fantasy because the story is believable where the reader can imagine Otto going to school and learning to make friends but in reality a dog does not go to school so it would not really happen. The story also has a round character present, being Otto, because the reader knows a lot about him and how he is really excited to go to school and make new friends but he is also scared to meet the new people and try to fit in. As a reader we know is wants and desires. Age appropriate: primary. Media: watercolor ( )

The illustrations are really painful. The story has a focus on rules, but isn't particularly notable or worth reading. If anything, the language of this book makes it simple enough to read out loud with a beginning reader.

Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0316835331, Hardcover)

hoes are for wearing, not eating; sharing is a must; and you have to wait your turn for the bathroom. You may already know these things, but Otto learns them during his first day of school. According to Todd and Otto, at school, 'You will meet new friends, learn new things, and then you will be really, really smart!' Todd Parr's bright, eye-catching illustrations and satisfying story conclusions have made his Otto series a favorite among preschoolers, parents, and educators alike. Otto is loveable, silly, and just the right dog to help preschoolers face new situations and overcome childhood dilemmas.
