Another of JQ's good-but-not-great novels. It's another early work, and, again, it shows. The characters are compelling enough, and Carolina is certainly a stitch, but this book distinctly lacks passion. There isn't a single truly satisfying smut scene, which, in a romance novel, is a pretty serious flaw. JQ for some reason feels compelled to draw the curtains just when things should be getting good. I do like the conceit of the hero working for the War Office, but it lacked follow-through; when you compare this to Lisa Kleypas's Bow Street Runners series, it pales in comparison and seems to lack some authenticity. Still, it's a nice bit of fluff, and a good way to spend an afternoon.

Girl fleeing evil guardian is mistaken as a spy, and held prisoner. Not much substance, but a bit of fun. I didn't really grow fond of either of the main characters, but I have high hopes for James, I hope he's the subject of the sequel. ( )

This book is completely adorable. Witty, charming, funny and well written, this book is the essence of Julia Quinn. While not as developed or well-written perhaps as her later books (the Bridgertons, for instance), it is a wonderful book with endearing characters and a fast-paced story. I especially like the part where Caroline foils Blake by coughing herself into losing her voice - and then can't write because Blake assumes she's left handed - very cutely done. This book is a charming and heartwarming read. ( )
