This is one of my favorite series of comic books for children. I originally found them because Joann Sfar is one of my favorite writers and illustrators for comics. I like the empowering message it has for kids, and how competent Sardine is in every adventure.

Poor kids they are trapped in some horrible waste land owned by Super Muscle Man (evil) and his assistant Dr croc ,or something like that (also evil) they work together to make kids to obedient but luckily Sardine and her uncle are here to put a stop to it !! ( )

The stories are silly and wildly imaginative. In one of the stories the author poke fun at education in America by having Sardine play a video game called “No Child Left Behind School II” , where they encounter a classroom full of bored and uninterested students. The drawings of the characters are rather simple, but the novel is filled with creative designs of strange creatures. The use of many vibrant colours adds to the pandemonium of the stories. I think kids will find the stories funny and entertaining.

Joann Sfar's illustrations are wonderful as always. The basic idea of Sardine and her Uncle and their mission is great, too. But the actual vignettes don't do it for me for the most part, and are sometimes more mean-spirited in their vengeance than I like. I suspect if I was the age this is was aimed at I would be much more entertained. Thus three stars. ( )
