This beautiful travel guide explores the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland by dividing the island into Dublin proper plus 7 geographical regions. Within each region, it identifies a small number of truly must-see locations, sights and activities, then a larger number of others of interest, and then brief paragraph descriptions of them. Its design and style is trademark DK Eyewitness -- with literally a thousand color images, maps and building cross-sections -- except the pages are now of matte paper instead of glossy.

Note two things: 1) it’s an exploratory guide, most suitable for plotting out a general itinerary in the early stages of vacation planning; and 2) with very few exceptions, it does NOT include listings for lodging, dining or entertainment (which is fine; online sites have excellent, up-to-date information on all of that). As an instrument of inspiration or armchair travel, it’s a lively volume.
