Could it be All Creatures Great and Small or any of the other of James Herriot's books? They're not fictional, but they read like fiction. There's definitely a cow's bottom scene in it - I remember it well!! :)

47. All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot, 499 pages. Review. A bit of childhood nostalgia, now turned a bit too unrelentingly upbeat and sweet for my taste. Perhaps I am becoming a curmudgeon as I trudge toward middle age?
