I liked Skeletons at the Feast too but I guess since it was such a departure for him, I forget that he wrote it! I also have The Law of Similars on my shelf so I think I might give that a go and see if he can't 'redemn' himself.

That's too bad. But I guess even a very good writer will have "off" books. Skeletons at the Feast was excellent, I thought. I'm glad you liked The Double Bind since it's on my shelf waiting for me.

... to abridge it. There were a lot of little details left out that prevented you from "knowing" the characters. #3 book was Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian read by Mark Bramhall I was sad to have it end and though I really like Bohjalian this might have been a book I picked ...

# 11 Sorry, I've been away for a bit. I read Skeletons at the Feast because I have read other books by Chris Bohjalian and liked them quite well. Also it got rave reviews on Amazon and other sites. My take: Another WWII book, not the best one I've read, and I've read lots of them. I did ...

Okay, let's start with this: Skeletons at the Feast. Richard says "Ghastly." Kath says "not so much--read it!" I'm still wavering. What's your take?

>26 cameling, I know what you mean...like that Skeletons at the Feast horror I had to get dressed, load the dog in the car, and drive all the way to the cathedral in Rockville Centre to shove in a donate box to be sure I'd never see it again.

... in early September. That's the objective anyway and then I'd love to move on to his other works. I was also a fan of Skeletons at the Feast, although his writing got a bit flowery at times, I felt the story was very strong. Poor RD. I have also heard Bohjalian's other books are a bit ...

Kath, I was looking in the library's catalog at the Bohjalian books they have, and I saw Skeletons at the Feast. It sounded interesting, and I noticed that you have it. Then I read the reviews, and saw Richard's, that said (in full) "Ghastly." I laughed and laughed, but wondered if you had ...

Mark; While I can't speak for Skeletons at the Feast, not having read it, I have read Midwives and now Double Bind and though I cannot claim to be nearly as discerning as "dear Richard", I really quite liked both of them. I will have to try the above titled work and see if my opinion agrees ...

Nice review on the Double Bind. Readers on LT seem to be very divided over Chris Bohjalian work. I read Skeletons at the Feast, my only one and I did really enjoy the story but his writing skills were just ok. I know others hated it, including dear Richard!

... and loving every minute of your comments. Several of them made me laugh out loud. I have been looking forward to reading Skeletons at the Feast which has been on my TBR pile for a long time. The honest comments by #148 have really piqued my interest and I may have to see if I have the same ...

... O'Brien's writing, the rain, or just some alchemy between the two? I picked up a book someone I adore recommended to me, Skeletons at the Feast, and first time through HATED IT. This second time? I couldn't finish The Memory Keeper's Daughter (read in a previous year) nor was I particularly interested in finishing Skeletons at the Feast (this quarter). The first bored me, and the second started out trivializing the Holocaust and offended me. The book I did finish and liked the least ...

... page point, decided the book was not doing anything for me, and promptly took it back to the library. I have also put off Skeletons at the Feast for right now, although I think I will go back to it at some point.

... Tale and it is probably the only book I feel the need to periodically reread. For what it's worth, I also enjoyed Skeletons at the Feast. I agree that the writing is a bit stilted and I'm really not a Bohjalian fan, but I enjoyed the story.

... I am revoltingly jealous! Brilliantly emerald hued! Hate-filled! Now, as penance for being so fortunate, you must finish Skeletons at the Feast! ;-0 >191 jbleil, I know what you mean...it's a big burden off, isn't it? >192 k-mom, have you posted a review?

#185: What does "Pearl-Rule" mean? Thanks for your opinion. I really thought that the subject matter in Skeletons at the Feast deserved better writing, but I'm on to something else now. There's always another book or three to read and I'm sticking with light subject matter while I'm spending ...

>179, 180...Skeletons at the Feast seems to me to be a precious, overwritten grad student submission to the Iowa Writer's Workshop. Sentences like, "You searched for the Jews in the woods, and then you shot them" which occurs on p51 of my ARC made me Pearl-Rule the book. I have a finite number ...

Maybe I won't read Skeletons at the Feast (post # 70) after all. I think I'll just chuck it and try for something better. It seems like a good story in theory, but the beginning is a little stilted, or is that just my imagination? Anyway, I found something more interesting (post # 177) to read ...

Okay, finally finished Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian after 13 days. Not that it was a hard read, just that I have a new granddaughter and I have my priorities! I only gave Skeletons two and a half stars. Bohjalian disappointed me this time with his poor character and plot ...

14. Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian. An okay read, but I felt that Bohjalian could have done much, much more with plot, character, and mood development. The premise of the changes experienced by affluent Germans while fleeing from the Russians was poorly depicted. Relatively little ...

I just started Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian. I didn't like a previous book I read by this author ver much, but I decided to give him another chance. This novel is about the Holocaust. Has anyone else read it? If so, what did you think of it. I haven't gotten very far into it ...

I just started Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjahlian. I'm giving him another chance since I didn't care for Midwives all that much. Anyway, I'm liking Skeletons at the Feast the opening which reminds me a bit of the opening of Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky. In both books a ...

... first time have two books going, unlike many of you with multiples. I'm keeping Shelby Foote for at home and have started Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian for work and travel. Looks good so far.

I've just finished Skeletons at the Feast which I really enjoyed. I was reminded in many ways of A Thread of Grace, which remains one of my favorite novels. Among the things the two have in common is that both are placed in the closing days of WWII and yet don't focus much on the military. I ...

Great review mckait. I read Midwives when it first came out, but have never read anything else by Chris Bohjalian. Skeletons at the Feast will be going on to my TBR pile.

Yesterday I read Skeletons at the Feast and thought it was an amazing read. I did love it.. and hate it. It really tore at my heart. Today I may read The Secret River. Not sure because I am about to go B&N!!! yay! and i have a gift card! As for Mr Updike... I read one of his books ...

36. Skeletons at the Feast completed. This is a wonderful book about a German family, a Jewish escapee, and a Scottish POW making their way toward the American lines at the end of WWII. Somewhat depressing at times, it rings true. 16 left to go.

#50: MusicMom41 was I too ambivalent on my feelings about Skeletons at the Feast?. I didn't mean to be. I really enjoyed the story but some of his prose was a little flowery. I've heard from other readers as well and he seems to be a bit of a mixed-bag! #60: bibliophool let me know how the ...

#36 I agree with your comment regarding Midwives. I didn't like his The Double Bind either. Skeletons at the Feast is a departure for Bohjalian and I think he manages to tell that story very well and it is a worthwhile read. #53 I loved The Pleasure of My Company! The Shopgirl was ...

I am going to have a hard time finding something to read after Skeletons at the Feast...so far my favorite of 2008.

I just finished Skeletons at the Feast which I absolutely loved although I cried many times during the book. I am about to start Snow Flower and the Secret Fan which I believe I heard about on this website - go figure! I hope it is not as emotionally draining as Skeletons at the Feast.

26. Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian - an excellent, moving book. I really loved this book although I found the subject matter very difficult and parts of the book extremely graphic and hard to read. I had read Midwives by this same author years ago but found this one much, much ...
