I recently read a few books that touched on the history of official relationships between men and women (Marriage:A History and Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism), and it was shocking to be reminded of how recently women have been granted even the most basic ... I have been reading quite a bit of non-fiction this month. I finished Marriage: A History which I didn't think was quite what it could have been, but it was full of some interesting factoids. sisaruus, I actually just finished Marriage, a History the other day. Verrrrrry interesting!
For the record, I've never been one to do things just because they are expected, which is probably the major reason why the thought of marriage and kids kind of freaks ... ... some historical insight. Information at http://www.press.uillinois.edu/s03/passet.html Also Stephanie Coontz's book Marriage, A History corrects many of our cultural assumptions about marriage of the past. And, for an adventurous read, I highly recommend Against Love by Laura Kipnis ... I'm about halfway through Marriage: A History -- very well-researched, but it's kind of putting me to sleep.
I'm going to start Little Children tonight -- haven't seen the movie and I wanted to read the book first.
