Genre: Fantasy Fiction
This book is a good example of a fantasy fiction because the animals (Arthur, friends and family) all live a normal human life by doing things such as going to school. Arthur and D.W. have a normal brother and sister relationship just like humans and go through normal human activities such as reading.
Characterization: D.W. is a flat character. She is not the main character because of her supporting role yet provides the protagonist (Arthur) with his storyline.
Media: Ink & Wash
Age Appropriateness: K-1

Arthur's Reading Race by Mar Brown is a very hands-on book for beginning readers. Arthur believes his little sister, D.W. can't read, so he tells her to read ten words to him while they are walking around town and is she can then he will buy her an ice cream. Read the book to see if D.W. can pass the test.

Arthur feels like he is a better reader then his sister, so while they walked through town he tried to read everything to her. She ended up being a better reader then him. This shows learning is not a computition but a skill that everyone can improve in. For the activity to go with this book you could have site words on flash cards and play a game with your students. While you explain it's ok if you read slower or faster than someone else. ( )
