I've got a copy of Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin if anyone is interested. (there are 37 on the wishlist for it.

45> How much Atwood have you read? The early stuff is pretty light, but some of her novels are gorgeous: Cat's Eye, The Blind Assassin , Alias Grace, etc. And she's far, far, far more versatile than Hemingway. Realistic novels, dystopias, historical fiction, and as you mentioned, poetry.

Thanks AA, that's good to hear. And I've got Book #2 on order. In the meantime, I'm starting The Blind Assassin by Marge Atwood. Not sure what to expect.
readeron, I enjoyed your review of The Blind Assassin - I've never read anything by Atwood, but am having trouble deciding what to start with, or if I'd really enjoy anything she's written. With your comments about approaching it as a mystery between the sisters, it sounds pretty appealing, so ...
Read The Blind Assassin . Excellent book, although it occasionally dragged. Atwood set up an intriguing mystery in the first few pages, then slowly unraveled the clues over the course of an entire family history. It's truly a heartbreaking story. I can see why this made the 1001 Books You Must ...

Not my favorite of hers. It was definitely un-put-downable, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I did Oryx and Crake or The Blind Assassin . Part of the problem may have been that earlier this week I read The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. Even though they were quite different books, I ...

I'm seconding the recs for Atwood's Alias Grace, The Blind Assassin , and The Handmaid's Tale. And, I would add Cat's Eye, which was great too. I hope you like some of her other work better than Oryx and Crake!
I'd go with The Handmaid's Tale. Yes, it's dystopian, but without all the wacky sci-fi stuff. I enjoyed The Blind Assassin , but I skipped over all the sci-fi-ish sections; I felt they distracted from the story.
I also liked Surfacing when I first read it back in the 1980s. Upon ...

66: That's so funny, I read Blind Assassin IMMEDIATELY after Atonement. I remember turing to my husband and saying "Margaret, Ian called. He wants his convoluted plot twists back." Of course, he had no clue what I was saying. And I think they were actually written in the reverse order. But it's ...

Margaret Atwood's book, The Blind Assassin , matches a lot of your details. It's a novel by a female Canadian author and was published in 2000. There is a husband in the book that does terrible things, and one of the early scenes in this book is a car crash. But it's the narrator's sister, and not ...

I'll have to write a review and add it later this weekend since I'm a little short on time right now.
Received two mooches-
Will in the World by Stephen Greenblatt
Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. The LT group read of The Blind Assassin has made me a fan.

Thanks for all the compliments on my reviews! I really hope you all enjoy The Blind Assassin as much as I did :)
Yesterday I read Atwood's The Blind Assassin , which won the Booker Prize when it was first released. I am now officially an Atwood fan and I cannot wait for her new novel to come out in the fall!
Well I've been one of those who keeps putting The Blind Assassin at the bottom of the TBR pile because it just has never seemed to appeal at the time I'm looking for something to read. But you've convinced me to get to it asap. Thanks.
Great review. I've never been tempted by The Blind Assassin and yet I generally like Atwood's writing. The Handmaid's Tale and Alias Grace I consider brilliant, and yet I was unable to finish Oryx and Crake when I attempted it, even though I gave it three seperate tries.
I loved The Blind Assassin , and I have become a major Atwood fan. I love the overall structure of the novel, with its many different narrative layers. I think they added to the meaning of the text - just like we have multiple voices, we have multiple meanings, which all, ultimately, lead us to ...
Book #42: The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood

14. The Blind Assassin (1001 List)

I find her quite an uneven writer myself: I love Cat's Eye, The Blind Assassin and Alias Grace, very much liked The Handmaid's Tale, but a lot of the others I've read have disappointed me (especially her earlier stuff).

I am about a third through Lady Oracle and I am really enjoying it. Much like The Blind Assassin , there are many stories and I sometimes forget that scenes I remember are from the same book. That phenomenon always makes me feel I've had a rich ...
I liked The Blind Assassin also, but my all time favorite is Cat's Eye. It taught me something about being a creative person that changed my life.
I've also read, Oryx and Crake, (most recently) and Handmaid's Tale, but in all truth, I didn't care very much for them.
I loved, loved, LOVED The Blind Assassin . Loved it!
... returned from our group's first book discussion. (see 5 above). A Booker Prizewinner was cut down to size. The book was The Blind Assassin . Two of the 6 only got to about page 30. Three of us finished it and of those only two enjoyed it. None of us thought the third strand in the book, ...
... Handmaid's Tale will always be my sentimental favorite, simply because it was my first introduction to her work, but Blind Assassin is also very high on my list of favorites.
My favourite is the Blind Assassin . But I find things to love about almost all her novels. I do prefer the funny, satirical ones like the Robber Bride over the darker dystopias like the Handmaid's Tale and Oryx and Crake.
... enjoy her stories about women more than her dystopia fiction. I particularly liked The Robber bride and Cat's eye and The Blind assassin , but I don't enjoy Oryx and Crake much.
My sentimental favorite would be The Handmaid's Tale because of how the story spoke so powerfully (and personally) to me at a certain time in my life. Since that time I have come to appreciate it in a more literary way and as a powerful warning message that I still consider revelant today.
... of Earthsea etc.
Lord Dunsany's The King of Elfland's Daughter
Raymond Feist's Magician
Robin Hobb's Assassin etc.
L. E. Modesitt's The Magic of Recluce - although some of the setup here is a whole bunch of people crash in a spaceship and become magic wielders due ...
... Then more and more titles popped up, and my list runeth over. So, here are ten of my top novels (no order, of course):
The Blind Assassin
the Feast of All Saints
The Chronicles of Narnia (listed as one book)
The Dogs of Babel
The Moor's Last Sigh
The Wings of the Dove (also ...
Am reading Alice Munro short stories for the first time, having just finished & enjoyed The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Despite its length, I couldn't put it down.
I think The Blind Assassin by Atwood was one of the best books I've ever read. I started reading Possession a few years ago, but lost interest with it. I may have just been at a restless point in my life. I do, however, plan on attacking it again.
Yes, I look at other posts which sometimes give me ideas. Currently reading The Blind Assassin and very much enjoying it.
... my book club. (Ack, I hate that term--what do other people use? I said book group before, but that didn't go over well.)
The Blind Assassin was a great read. I hope you enjoy it!
Hazelk, I loved The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. It's the book that got me started reading Atwood again, after reading some of her earlier work in the 70s. Recently read her latest, Moral Disorder, a collection of stories.
Have just started Margaret Atwood's Blind Assassin . What are your opinions of this book?
Older ones: Henry James and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Newer ones: Salman Rushdie and Margaret Atwood (The Blind Assassin was astounding).
What I’m reading… Well, Bestine, now I'm a bit embarrassed for reading Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Actually, I shouldn’t be embarrassed because it’s a pretty powerful little book. But, compared to what you’re reading, it’s just basic popular fiction. It’s an example of ...
I finished Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. I'm still working on The Namesake, Lady Anne's Dangerous Man, and The Assassin .
I also started Miss Wonderful by Loretta Chase and Valley of Secrets by Charmian Hussey.
