... of extra months. And speaking of finishing, I just read the last book for my Dystopia/Post-Apocalyptic category! Little Brother. In some ways, this is not the kind of book I usually read--phrases like "techno-geek" on the cover don't tend to appeal to me. But I picked this one up ...

61. Little Brother. In some ways, this is not the kind of book I usually read--phrases like "techno-geek" on the cover don't tend to appeal to me. But I picked this one up because both my brother ...

I finished Little Brother a couple of days ago. Not only was the book an enjoyable read, I raced right through it, and look forward to re-reading it in a few years. Highly recommended for ages 13+. My copy was an ARC and there were two afterwords and a bibliography and an acknowledgment following ...

33. Little Brother by Cory Doctorow I had been wanting to read this book ever since Scott Westerfeld mentioned it on his blog which was at least a year ago. Anyway, I finally finished it, and I enjoyed it... but I did find that all the techie speak that was in it was over my head and I ...

... rep goes native, well, Banks gave himself great opportunity for social commentary, and runs with it. Just picked up Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. I think it is just because it was on a lower shelf. This should be a quick read so perhahps I'll still get to Playgrounds of the Mind or ...

Finished and almost finished with two disappointing ones: Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, a techno-thriller centered around hacking that looked like fun but wasn't my cup of tea at all, and The Silver Pigs by Lindsey Davis, the first of a series of mysteries set in ancient Rome that looked ...

... water and such after reading that too. In the end all I managed to convince them of was to read Life As We Knew It. Little Brother made me look more closely at gaming consoles :)

4 PhoenixTerran Me too! And bottled water. And after I read Little Brother I wanted to get rid of my newly-purchased toll quick pass thing.

From the library: Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, a "techno-geek thriller', and The Silver Pigs by Lindsey Davis, the first in a series of mysteries set in ancient Rome.

Don't know Hex but here are some computer(ish) SF The Hacker And The Ants Little Brother Permutation City Souls In The Great Machine uses humans instead of electrons. Cryptonomicon - even includes some perl in an appendix. Loads of short stories.

A Little Rebellion by Marion Starkey

I have seen several reviews of Little Brother here on LT. I really must get my hands on a copy!

> 97 Little Brother sounds exactly like something I would love. I am going to track down a copy. (I have heard it is online, but I would rather read a hard copy). Thank you for the recommendation.

54. Little Brother by Cory Doctorow - another good YA dystopian novel. Set in San Francisco in the near future, it's a story of what can happen when national security is taken to the extreme. It has a little of the feel of the SF masters of my youth (MANY years ago), which is one of the ...

A 1984 / Little Brother comparison would be /really/ neat for high school kids. Very contemporary, very interesting, and a lot of them are likely to have to know Orwell for other classes and just generally... knowing stuff about our political discourse today. I could see getting some really ...

... sound like fascinating classes, and its too bad I can't enroll in one! Oh, and last night I remembered a book I'd add: Little Brother. Of course, I'd make the kids in my class read 1984 first, but that's because I don't think you pick up on as much if you aren't familiar with the first ...

... but it's not overdone. Chadda has a winner here, and I sure hope he writes more about Billie. I've started reading Little Brother. I keep hearing good things about Cory Doctorow but this is the first thing I've read by him. I'm really enjoying it.

I'm still waiting Traitor's Knot as an ebook, so I've read a bunch of other things: The Little Prince charming. Little Brother - no relation! YA near future SF and the perils of a surveilance society. Doesn't have any answers though I've just finished hammerfall and (want, click, have ...

#75 - I read Little Brother a couple of months ago. The writing style irritated me a bit for the first chapter or so but I quickly became hooked and read it in a few days. Kept getting really angry and having to tell myself "This isn't real, it's only a story" but then another part of me would ...

little brother - YA urban SF. Quite fun, if not totally believable. A suitable warning of possabilities. Hammerfall Perhaps not CJC's best work, but still good. Only a few pages left and I rather suspect a lot of the details will never be revealed, which might be annoying. I assume the ...

... YA sci fi books out, several already mentioned - The Hunger Games, Life as We Knew It, The Adoration of Jenna Fox, Little Brother, Unwind. I'm not sure if YA tends to be genre-heavy, or if that's just what I and the teens I know end up reading!

Little Brother

Little Brother by Cory Doctorow is unmistakingly about the issue of privacy-out-the-window-in-the-name-of-security. It's a YA book (I work in a high school library). The book is even available free on line (go to his website for the link). The person below me has a special place or chair ...

... LeGuin's Earthsea books are classics of fantasy for good reason. If you like scifi you might try Cory Doctorow's Little Brother, it's available for free online under Creative Commons license.

I just finished Cory Doctorow's Little Brother, which was great. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is next on my list, but I'm going to reread Pride and Prejudice first so it'll be fresher in my mind.

I just finished Cybele's Secret and a now reading Little Brother.

... It would be terrific to get some good books into the hands of these kids...I just sent off my brand-new, read-once copy of Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. Now I just have to finish my own novel and get it into next year's drive (lol). Thanks, Katherine, for point this group out to me!

Little Brother by Cory Doctorow

@aviatiakh - It is kind of like the chapter a day things, but you can set the length of your delivery. I read Little Brother, too. I think he is a very interesting writer. Book #51 - The Gilded Chain by Dave Duncan This is actually the first book in the King's Blades series, which I ...

Welcome to librarything! I have Little Brother on hold at my library, so I was glad to see your review. The First Three Minutes also looks interesting, that'll have to go on the TBR pile :)

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom sounds interesting. I've only read his Little Brother which is a YA book. Is the email delivery one of those chapter a day things?

... It made me laugh. 5. Fermat's Last Theorem by Amir D. Aczel. This is a math book. I love them - who knows why? 6. Little Brother by Cody Doctorow. Neil Gaiman recommended it, which is why I decided to read it. It's good, but not great. I love all the hacker-type stuff. It goes some ...

I just finished Little Brother which was amazing! I probably wouldn't have picked it up except that I heard it won the White Pine award here in Ontario, and people were surprised, so I decided to see what it was about. (The White Pine award is an award for Canadian books; high school students ...

I don't read much SF marketed as YA, but I loved Little Brother. Others I've enjoyed over the years, but have no idea if they would appeal to the youth of today: Podkayne of Mars by Robert A. Heinlein Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury Growing U ...

I love Eastern Standard Tribe and Down And Out In The Magic Kingdom! Must have missed Little Brother when it came out - how is it?

Hasn't anyone mentioned Little Brother by Cory Doctorow?

Little Brother by Cory Doctorow is first person. Eastern Standard Tribe and Down And Out In The Magic Kingdom are as well I think. The Heritage by Will Ashon is first person. To be honest it isn't something I find particularly memorable.

Book #44 - Little Brother by Cory Doctorow Marcus, aka w1n5t0n, aka m1k3y, is a teenager living in San Francisco. He and his friends are detained by the Department of Homeland Security after terrorists blow up the Bay Bridge. The subsequent imprisonment, release, and monitoring of Marcus ...

I can see where your'e coming from, although I enjoyed Little Brother it was er.. rather OTT. As D+O is better I think I will reserve a copy from the library and meanwhile stick to boing boing articles! Thanks for the feedback

Updated with Little Brother. Really not as good as D+O. Kind of an irritating book, actually, though I perhaps expected too much of it given the hype. Or maybe becase it is a "young adults" book. I really can't see how this and Anathem can both be up for the Hugo for Best Novel. Nowhere ...

Finished little brother by Cory Doctorow last night. Usually i find him too self important, but, maybe because this was meant as a YA book, he sticks to his characters and story very nicely. A good, cautionary tale about "the war on terror" from the POV of a smartass but not unlikeable high ...

Little Brother, by Cory Doctorow, is a well-paced, interesting book that raises some serious questions about security and accountability. The story is both apt and readable, but the ending seemed too neat, and too easy for the good guys. Despite that, I was impressed (and I like a happy ending ...

16. Little Brother by Cory Doctorow (374 p., YA) This 1984-for-the-post-9/11-generation cypherpunk novel takes place in San Francisco, where Marcus is a 17 year old high school student who knows his way around hacking and fooling his school's many "security measures". He and some friends ...

Regarding Little Brother - in the UK, it is published as adult fiction. Just thought that news might interest some. Similarly, in the UK, The Graveyard Book is published two editions. One for children, and one for adults. The part which boggles me is that our library system only has *one ...

@ #11: I don't really find it too odd that adults would be reading The Graveyard Book or Little Brother, really. Both authors are very, very popular with adults. There are people (myself included) who would read anything Neil Gaiman ever wrote, up to and including grocery lists ...

... (as do I...). However, I also find it interesting that we have certain children's books like The Graveyard Book and Little Brother that are in very high demand with adult patrons.

11. Little Brother by Cory Doctorow ( 3 out of 5) Not sure I can add anything to the many reviews out there but here goes.. Overall I enjoyed it. It does have its flaws: the preaching can be overbearing, the adult characters were a bit stereotyped (although I see why they were) and it ...
