Debut novel from solicitor Ronan O'Brien, the book is about an Irish boy who, after a near death experience, becomes able to foresee the tragic fate of one of those closest to him in his life. And this frightening ability doesn't go away either. Despite the dark nature of the story, I found this book to have plenty of amusing parts. Some of the characters in the book reminded me of a recent Channel 4 TV series in the UK called "Shameless". Personally, I found the ending a little too predictable, but it was still a good read. Written with that delicate and melancholy sense of inevitability which is unique to modern Irish literary novelists, this is a metaphysical examination of the phenomenon of foresight. After a near-death experience as a child, the narrator is cursed with the ability to ‘see’ the deaths of those he loves the most, yet is unable to prevent them. Exquisitely observed and imbued with a sad sense of magic, Confessions of a Fallen Angel is a fey, dreamy tale of the Celtic twilight, tragic, haunting and beautiful. This lyrical story is highly recommended as a grand book and a lovely read. 0.060 seconds to build listing

Interesting and there are moments of pure humour that shine out (the sequence in the library is wonderful) there are places where it seems a little forced. Still a good read, he's an author I'll keep an eye out for. (
