I bought this book because it was recommended by Amazon. The only author I was familiar with was MaryJanice Davidson after collecting her Undead series, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and am still craving for more. I braced myself for some spoilers because I know I'm reading some works of other authors that are also part of their respective series. I enjoyed most of the short stories here, but some not so much. If you're a fan of vampire stories and such, this is a time-travels-fast type of read.1st story: The guy is screaming gay, didn't like him at all. In this story, I felt I started in the middle but had no urgent desire to read the Anita Blake series.2nd story: It's intriguing, would like to read a Sookie Stackhouse novel.3rd story: Very concise, since I'm familiar with the other characters from Davidson's 'Undead' series, this is a side story of a French vampire who appeared in the 5th book (Undead and Unpopular). It's quite charming to read Sophie's and Liam's history and there's always the signature humor where Betsy and Sinclair are concerned.4th story: Interesting, witches and vampires working together and it's sort of a fantasy world. I liked it, I've been warming to the subject of dragons.5th story: This one's quite serious, didn't like it that much. But at least there are no loose ends in this one. ( )I have finished reading [Bite]. Those who like vampire fiction will love this book. Bite is an anthology of short stories from some of the genres best authors. The included stories are:
I am still relatively new to vampire fiction, so most of these author's are new to me. I thoroughly enjoyed these stories, however, and I will most certainly be delving deeper into this genre. Pretty good anthology. Just wish the stories were a bit longer. Great stories. I got this book from the library because I love Laurell Hamilton and this book opened me up to new authors I had never heard of. Good all the way through, found some new authors A collection of short stories by some of the hottest vampire authors around. Most of them have some very steamy sex scenes and a lot of action. The Girl who was Infatuated with Death - Laurell K Hamilton An Anita Blake story set between Blue Moon and Obsidian Butterfly. Anita is called in to investigate a case of a 17 year old girl whose mother finds two vampire bite marks at the top of her inner thighs. In this world vampires are citizens but it is illegal to turn someone under 18 which takes 3 bites. The twist is the girl has bone cancer and becomming a vampire will save her from a leg amputation. Anita goes to see her vampire "friend" Jean Claude and gets sidetracked by his sexiness. One Word Answer - Charlaine Harris A tale of Sookie Stackhouse. One night a strange black limo turns up with a strange supernatural man inside. He tells her that her cousin was turned into a vampire and then killed in a cemetary in New Orleans trying to raise the Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. The plot twists as it emerges who the real killer was. Biting in Plain Sight - MaryJanice Davidson De Sophie Tourneau is a vet and a vampire and seems accepted by the twosnfolk of Embarrass, Minnesota. One man in particular, Liam, has accepted her and has been secretly in love with her for years. He decides to finally tell her as a vampire is causing young girls to seeminly kill themselves. The enlist the help of Queen Betsy on their quest to track him down and kill him. Galahad - Angela Knight A mixture of Arthurian and Grail legends with vampires, dragons, witches and hot hot sex! Some very silly ideas, but the sex scenes were amazinginly hot. Blood Lust - Vickie Taylor Daniel Hart is a microbiologist who has created synthetic blood when a vampire comes along and steals his research, home, woman and car. He tracks down another vampire, Deadre Rue, to turn him so it can be a fair fight. A few twists along the way. I loved Galahad but more for the sex than the mythology. I also really enjoyed Blood Lust and Biting in Plain Sight. The Girl who was Infatuated with Death was my least favourite. It had a really good premise, but Hamilton seemed to forget it once Anita met up with Jean Claude sadly. The literary equivalent of Death by Chocolate. with exception of Hamilton's work , the rest of it isn't the stuff I'm deliberately waste money on. I bought this for the Charlaine Harris story and also happended to enjoy Angela Knight's. The other two were okay. However, don't bother with the Hamilton "story." Once again, she takes the first couple chapters of a novel that will be coming out and publishers throw it into an anthology to attract buyers with her name. I expect that from publishers, you'd think Hamilton would be more considerate of her fans. Bite is an anthology featuring a who's-who of story authors. I usually buy an anthology based on one of the authors, but any one of these names could sell the book, except that I got Vickie Taylor confused with Karen Taylor. Sorry about that! * "The Girl who Was Infatuated with Death" by Laurell K. Hamilton" This is a short story in the Anita Blake series, and takes place, time-wise, between Blue Moon and Obsidian Butterfly, a period I know I've speculated a lot about, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Anita's hired by an anxious mother to prevent a 17-year-old girl from becoming a vampire. The story gives us some nice Anita/Jean-Claude moments, and also features an interesting moral dilemma in the Anitaverse, as the girl from the title has compelling reasons to want to be turned. * "One Word Answer" by Charlaine Harris This is a short story in the Sookie Stackhouse series. Her cousin Hadley has died, leaving Sookie a legacy. Turns out Hadley had become a vampire, and the vampire Queen of Louisiana has come to offer Sookie the chance to stake the vampire who killed her cousin. Vampires Bob & Bubba are there as well, and while this is a short story, it's a fun read and a nice addition to the series. * "Biting in Plain Sight" by MaryJanice Davidson Like her story in last year's Cravings, this story is in the Betsy Taylor series, but written in 3rd person POV from a perspective other than Betsy's. Which is a lot of fun, btw--we know how Betsy views herself, and it's interesting to see how other characters view her. Dr. Sophie is a veterinarian in a small town with a don't-ask-don't-tell policy: she's a vampire, but she's also a very good vet, and they don't want her to leave. Liam has had a crush on her forever, but has been too shy to do more than round up barn cats for her to treat until a series of teen suicides that Sophie realizes is the work of a vampire. She decides to take the information to Queen Betsy, and Liam takes the chance to make himself indispensible to her. The story is full of Davidson's trademark humor and sensuality, and appearances by Betsy, Eric, & the librarian, who's right up there with the orangutan in the Discworld books on my list of favorite fictional librarians. * "Galahad" by Angela Knight This story is in the Arthurian vampire series. Caroline is a new maja, or witch. She's been left alone in Avalon while everyone else is off fighting the vampires created before the defeat of the bad guy from Master of the Night. Caroline has a vision of herself and a swordsman fighting off more vampires and knows that she has to help. When she finds the swordsman, he turns out to be Galahad. The Galahad. Who's not particularly happy about having to take a green witch into battle, or having to teach her the basics of life as a maja, including undoing the mistrust caused by the vampire who made her. This series keeps getting better and better. I can't wait to see what's next. * "Blood Lust" by Vickie Taylor This is about Daniel, a microbiologist who's developed a completely synthetic blood, a product with tremendous benefits. But a vampire trashes his lab, steals the formula, and the woman Daniel loves. So Daniel searches for a vampire himself. His intentions are to become a vampire, revenge himself on his enemy, then kill his girlfriend and himself, setting them free from being evil fiends. But when he finds Deadre, a vampire, but not much of an evil fiend, he finds that nothing's quite what he expected. It's an entertaining vampire story, as well as a story about how revenge and love change a person. The various stories presented in this gave me the insight into each writer that I needed to make me decide to actually read their works. If you are unsure of what Charlane Harris, MaryJanice Davidson, Laurell K. Hamilton and the others are like, give Bite a try. I was laughing and having fun the entire book! A great read! #72, 2006 I checked this out of the library just to read the Sookie Stackhouse story by Charlaine Harris, but ended up reading the entire book. Good vampire stories, mostly, almost all of them having a romantic element. I wished the Sookie story was longer (but that’s just because I adore that series). I enjoyed all the other stories, as well, with the exception of the final one. For some reason, the characters in that one annoyed me. Also, I was amused to read through half of the Davidson story before realizing it was set in the world of “Undead and Unwed.” (Didn’t recognize the author’s name at first). I’ve read a couple of those books, and had to laugh when I remembered about the Queen. :D All in all, a good way to spend an evening. This was the first book I had ever read by Hamilton et al. I never thought I would be interested in paranormal/vampires but these short stories were very well written and urged me to read more about them. Bite (Jove, 2004) is a collection of vampire tale by female authors all of whom add a touch of romance to their stories. Probably the best known is Laurall K Hamilton, author of the very popular Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. In "The Girls Who Was Infatuated With Death", a desperate mother begs Anita to find her teenage daughter before the girl allows herself to be turned into a vampire. Anita takes the case but needs the help of the gorgeous, seductive vampire Jean-Claude to find the teen. First, however, they must slake their lust before turning to the problems of a runaway. Sookie Stackhouse, heroine of "One Word Answer" as well as Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire series, finds herself in a jam when ordered by the vampire queen of Louisiana to stake a rogue vamp. Fortunately Sookie's undead, former lover Bill steps in to help. MaryJanice Davidson's "Biting in Plain Sight" is easily the most charming story in the collection. This sweet, amusing tale has a more languid pace than the raucously funny Undead Series (beginning with Undead and Unwed) which brought the author much critical acclaim. Sophie is a vampire who finds true love with Liam, an unpretentious good ol' boy from northern Minnesota. Together they, aided by Betsy (Queen of the Vampires and Eric Sinclair (her sexy consort) track down and eliminate a rather, dumb, bad-guy vampire. Angela Knight's imaginative romance, "Galahad" is set in the same universe as her novel Master of the Night (Berkley, 2004). Caroline has recently acquired the magical powers of a witch which she uses in combination with those of the vampire warrior Galahad as they fight the forces of evil bent on the destruction of mankind. There is a good deal of action nicely intertwined with erotic play. Short stories written by Laurell K Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, MaryJane Davidson, Angela Knight and Vickie Taylor. The LKH is set during the period Anita refused to see either of the boys and tried to learn how to build psychic shields. It's all about the hotness that is Jean-Claude. Cheap, trashy, atrocious and hypnotically attractive. Good collection of stories. The ones from Harris and Davidson are good. Hamilton’s story is OK, but nothing great. I especially liked Knight’s tale of Sir Galahad as a vampiric warrior. Laurel K Hamilton's "The Girl who was Infatuated with Death" had Anita needs to talk to Jean-Claude but oh angst she's got issues with him, works out most of angst, talks to Jean-Claude, solves the problem, goes to bed with Jean-Claude. Strangely enough the plot part of Incubus Dreams was almost the same story, only with more men. 2.5/5 Charlaine Harris's One Word Answer was a Stookie story. Stookie getting revenge on someone who killed her cousin. 3/5 Maryjanice Davidson's Biting in Plain Sight was the best of the series, Betsy didn't appear until quite late and it was the story of a community who had come to terms with their vampire, a man who wanted to be closer to her and the adventures they had while dealing with a vampire who convinced people to kill themselves for love. 4/5 Angela Knight's Galahad was a cute story about Vampires and Witches being magical beings created to save the world. I'd actually like to read more in this vein (yeah I couldn't help myself) 3/5 Vickie Taylor's Blood Lust was a story about a man who created an artificial blood and the implications that that would have for the vampire community. 3.5/5 |
