Een half punt af van de quotering omdat Williams zijn eigen positie als homoseksuele man soms te veel laat doorklinken - Walther L. Williams lays down a very serious study on berdaches or two-spirits. I have seldom seen it this thorough. I have removed a half point from the rating because I fear Williams has let his own position as a homosexual man influence his interpretation of the berdache too much. ( )This book explores the idea of the "third gender" in American Indian societies, especially concerning its role in their daily lives and the effects of European influence. It gives an enlightening view of gender and sexuality from a completely different perspective from our Christian-dominated values. It also presents a lot of historical information from the colonial periods that you probably didn't read about in your high school history book. no reviews | add a review
Amazon.com (ISBN 0807046159, Paperback)Walter L. Williams's excellent research has produced one of the most extensive studies of the berdache culture among Native Americans. Unlike the larger American society, Native Americans historically have respected, and in many tribal nations venerated, homosexuals. Williams explains the berdache as a custom, its social roles, and the berdache history, including its introduction to the European concept of sin and intolerance of sexual diversity. The word berdache applies almost exclusively to males, mainly because historical records only relate dealings with aboriginal males, but Williams also includes a chapter on female sexual diversity, using the word amazon to describe these often warriorlike women.(retrieved from Amazon Fri, 24 Apr 2009 07:58:09 -0400) The first test round has been closed.
