Randall Kerry joins a fur trapping expedition to strike out into manhood. He soon finds himself alone after his expedition was attacked by Indians. Choosing to care for a Pawnee Indian that he had shot in an attack, he finds a friend to ride out the winter with, in the Colorado Mountains. They encounter more Indians both good and bad, bandits and survivors left for died. The harshness of the mountains forges Randall into a man, changing him and maturing him.
Unlike many of Dan Parkinson’s books that start right in the middle of action, this starts a little slower. This book, although categorized as a western, is story of the frontier and pioneering life. It’s not a story of gunfighters and wrongs to be righted; it’s survival. Dan's books are easy reads and enjoyable. ( )
