At first, the war doesn’t mean much to Lily. She’s glad Aunt Florrie and Philippa have come to her hills from London. She’s proud that her dad wants to join up. Gradually, though, the realities of war come home to her – evacuees, air-raid shelters and, with her father abroad, village gossip about her mother’s men-friends. Even the good-natured Philippa, with her slow mind and body, becomes a burden. But as Lily learns to hate, it is Philippa who, in a courageously selfless act, shows her what love means.
