Thus was a good, solid book that I enjoyed, but not a great book. It would be a 3.5 if I could do that. I especially enjoyed the personality of the main character, she reminded me a lot of myself. This is a good "closed room mystery" and I would definitely recommend it. ( )

Modern day locked-room mystery with some political commentary thrown in. This book is the first by Holt I have read but it won't be the last! ( )

I had trouble engaging with the story and I don't really know why. It's well written with a clever story and the characters are not "stock". When I finished this book I realized that the author had used a particular technique to tell the story and create the mystery. She did it in a well-reason & skillful manner as well.

The protagonist, Hanne Wilhelmsen, is the basis for a series of books. This is not the first book in the series and while it isn't critical to following this story it may spoil a surprise in the earlier books.

I'm going to give another book by this author a try and see if maybe my problem was with the writing style of the author or if it had to do more with where my mind was at. ( )

I wasn't certain at first that I was going to enjoy this audiobook...the narrator had a rather strange manner of speaking, although her voice was lovely and clear. However, this is a translation from the original Norwegian, and as the story went along (it is told in first person), I began to rather like that. It actually enhanced the feeling of *place* in the novel, which is extremely important. I also liked the irascible and cranky main character of the novel, as well. She is a very good "imperfect" character.

As to the mystery element of the book, it was well-played and intriguing. I'll definitely be looking for more by this author. ( )

It might lack the myriad twists and turns of Christie at her best, but 1222 is a splendidly chilling read this icy December.

Epigraph
Dedication
This book is a little bit serious and a lot of fun, Iohanne.
That's why it's my first little book for you.
First words
As it was only the train driver who died, you couldn't call it a disaster.
Quotations
And beneath all this, beneath an inconceivable number of hexagonal ice crystals, dry and almost weightless in the biting cold, beneath this immense covering of air and frozen water that stretched from Hallingdal to Flåm, from Hardanger to Hemsedal, beneath all this there were people, tiny as insects, who didn't yet dare to believe that the whole thing was over, and that they could creep out into the world once more.

Book description
From Norway's bestselling female crime writer comes a suspenseful locked-room mystery set in an isolated hotel in Norway, where guests stranded during a monumental snowstorm start turning up dead.

A train on its way to the northern reaches of Norway derails during a massive blizzard, 1,222 meters above sea level. The passengers abandon the train for a nearby hotel, centuries-old and practically empty, except for the staff. With plenty of food and shelter from the storm, the passengers think they are safe, until one of them is found dead the next morning.

With no sign of rescue, and the storm continuing to rage, retired police inspector Hanne Wilhelmsen is asked to investigate. Paralysed by a bullet lodged in her spine, Hanne has no desire to get involved. But she is slowly coaxed back into her old habits as her curiosity and natural talent for observation force her to take an interest in the passengers and their secrets. When another body turns up, Hanne realizes that time is running out, and she must act fast before panic takes over. Complicating things is the presence of a mysterious guest, who had travelled in a private rail car at the end of the train and was evacuated first to the top floor of the hotel. No one knows who the guest is, or why armed guards are needed, but it is making everyone uneasy. Hanne has her suspicions, but she keeps them to herself.

Trapped in her wheelchair, trapped by the storm, and now trapped with a killer, Hanne must fit the pieces of the puzzle together before the killer strikes again.
