Hailed by Salman Rushdie as a "brilliantly innovative thriller-writer," Philip Kerr is the creator of taut, gripping, noir-tinged mysteries that are nothing short of spellbinding. In this second book of the Berlin Noir trilogy, The Pale Criminal brings back Bernie Gunther, an ex-policeman who thought he'd seen everything on the streets of 1930s Berlin--until he turned freelance and each case he tackled sucked him further into the grisly excesses of Nazi subculture. Hard-hitting, fast-paced, and richly detailed, The Pale Criminal is noir writing at its blackest and best.… (more)

Another excellent story populated with real figures from Nazi Germany including Heydrich. The level of detail about life in Berlin, locations and leading Nazis reads like a contemporary record. Bernie is running a private detective agency and is hired by a rich widow whose daughter has gone missing. This leads him to a sophisticated anti-Jewish plot and contact with Heydrich and Himmler. This is the second book of the Bernie Gunther series, and the second one I've read. Bernie Gunther is a private investigator in Germany during the time of Hitlers rise to power. He was a former criminal investigator for the German police, and seems to know a lot of people. He's not afraid to speak his mind, even when criticizing the Nazis, which he does often, or speaking up for the Jews. Basically, he seems to not be intimidated easily, and his usual answer to threats is a wisecrack.

I enjoyed this book more than the first one, perhaps because I got to know the main characters a little better. Again, I chose the audiobook version, by the same narrator. This time I was able to follow the story better than the first one, possibly because I was ready for the multiple plots that seem to be normal for these books. ( )

I am finding that I have some guilt about enjoying a detective mystery series with this setting. And yet the deeply weird SS spiritualism subplot deserves a genre rendition. Nowhere to shelter in Berlin at this time. ( )

Very good, I believe I liked this better than the first, which was also very good. So I guess this was very, very good? Narrator was good as well!

I will say that I thought the couple of sex scenes were a little creepy. A little too explicit for the needs of the book. Fabio is not on the cover. ( )

Epigraph
Much about your good people moves me to disgust, and it is not their evil I mean. How I wish they possessed a madness through which they could perish, like this pale criminal. Truly I wish their madness were called truth or loyalty or justice: but they possess their virtue in order to love long and in a miserable ease.
