Det har gått ti år siden den pukkelryggede Jean de Florette døde, og datteren hans Manon er tilbake i landsbyen der hennes far mislyktes. Hun er blitt et meget vakker ung kvinne, og Papets nevø Ugolin blir temmelig raskt hjelpeløst forelsket i henne.

Manon vil imidlertid ikke ha Ugolin. Da hun i tillegg finner ut at det er han og Papet som i sin tid forårsaket farens ulykke og død, sverger hun hevn over dem.

I filmen får vi også vite hvem som var Jean de Florettes egentlige far. Dette har vært en dypt bevart hemmelighet i alle år, og avsløringen kommer som et sjokk. ( )
