I just began what I think is the first book my mother has ever recommended to me (I'm 44 and she's never been much of a reader). This got me to thinking what other books I read because she had them around the house. Some Al-Anon propaganda, maybe some Erma Bombeck, What Color Is Your Parachute? and this (not that I know whether she read it) are the few titles I know she owned. I remember marveling as a child at the pat situations the author used to illustrate his principles. At 12 I saw how useless and facile he was. Anyway, for completeness, I hereby note the title

To my Judy, and to the hundreds of children I haved counseled, who provided me the opportunity to learn about parenthood.

To Elaine, my companion, counselor, and colleague in parenthood, whose penetrating insights so frequently enriched my own thinking and contributed immeasurably to the development and growth of Parent Effectiveness Training.

To the group of dedicated P.E.T. instructors, whose faith and inspired efforts as pioneers of our program in their own communities helped shape my dream into a reality.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0609806939, Paperback)

P.E.T., or Parent Effectiveness Training, began almost forty years ago as the first national parent-training program to teach parents how to communicate more effectively with kids and offer step-by-step advice to resolving family conflicts so everybody wins.  This beloved classic is the most studied, highly praised, and proven parenting program in the world -- and it will work for you. Now revised for the first time since its initial publication, this groundbreaking guide will show you:
How to avoid being a permissive parent
How to listen so kids will talk to you and talk so kids will listen to you
How to teach your children to "own" their problems and to solve them
How to use the "No-Lose" method to resolve conflicts

Using the timeless methods of P.E.T. will have immediate results: less fighting, fewer tantrums and lies, no need for punishment. Whether you have a toddler striking out for independence or a teenager who has already started rebelling, you'll find P.E.T. a compassionate, effective way to instill responsibility and create a nurturing family environment in which your child will thrive.
