They play all day and when the moon comes out, the moon and the bear play hide and seek. The moon hides and the bear can't find it anywhere. The bird helps the bear look for the moon but they still can't find it anywhere. Right as they start to give up, the wind blows and the moon appears from behind a cloud. Little Bird shows Bear how to play hide and seek. They play all day long. When the moon comes out Bear plays with the moon. But Bear can't find where Moon is hiding. He looks and looks. When Little Bird sees Bear, Bear ask Little Bear if he will help him find the moon. When they can't find Moon they ask the forest animals to help. Then a gust of wind blows and there is Moon. He was behind a big cloud the whole time. The artwork is as simple as it gets, but together with the story, "Moongame" had the tendency to draw me in. Bear and Bird play hide and go seek, a new game to Bear. Liking it, having played it all day with Bird, he asks the moon to play. Easily, the moon spots Bear hiding in a hollowed out tree. When it comes for the moon’s turn to hide, it hides behind a big cloud. Bear searches high and low for the moon, mistaking a flower, a wheel of cheese, and a yellow balloon for it. Eventually Bird teams up with Bear again and they beseech the other animals of the forest to search. Giving up, Bear signifies his defeat to the moon. The moon appears from the clouds and Bear smiles and dances; the image of bear dancing incited a great joy within myself. The sequence of events the pictures dictate, along with the story are executed cleverly, hilariously, and reflect a spellbound glorification of nature, for what the author imagines it to be: childlike, innocent and beautiful (An example, Mr. Asch turns the moon into an active character, capable of playing children’s games such as hide and go seek). I really enjoyed this book. I thought the book would be good for 1st -k. You could read this book while learning about the moon. At the end of the book you should ask the class if the moon could come out of the sky and play hide and go seek to avoid any confusion. no reviews | add a review
