... sounds horribly convoluted and illegible, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book and thought it worth the mention. ^-^
Freedom and Necessity by Steven Brust and Emma Bull is also an epistolary novel, but I've never read that one before. *tilts head, trying to recall if she knows any others*
... Freedom and Necessity is so great.

27. Freedom and Necessity by Steven Brust and Emma Bull
28. Yoga for People Who Can't Be Bothered to Do It by Geoff Dyer All taken, thanks.
... entries.) I know Emma Bull (War of the Oaks recommendation) has also written an epistolary novel with Steven Brust called Freedom and Necessity, but I haven't read it. I just know it exists and recall it being described as 'epistolary'. Which isn't much of a reason to recommend it, I know.
H ... ... L Sayers, P D James, Amanda Cross. Maybe also Sarah Caudwell if you are looking for dry academic wit.
Perhaps also freedom and necessity by Steven Brust and Emma Bull. (It may be listed as fantasy, but it's more of a historical/suspense novel). ... Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones
The Lyra books by Patricia Wrede
More
Jhereg, Yendi, Taltos by Steven Brust, and when you fall in love, you can read the other 13 related books
Sf
Needle, Through the Eye of a Needle by Hal Clement
Sundiver, Startide R ... ... from the way I described it. V. excited too about all the suggestions for epistolary novels. I'm going to start off with Freedom and Necessity, Griffin and Sabine and Sorcery and Cecelia and I've added all of them to my Amazon wish list. Hadn't even thought to search the tags, but will do ... There's also Emma Bull and Stephen Brust's Freedom and Necessity (definitely not your book) and Griffin and Sabine which has beautifully illustrated postcards and actual, decorated envelopes in the book that you can pull the letters out of (rather short, though). ... try one of these days.
My bad, to have left Ursula Le Guin off my list. I love her Earthsea books as well.
Steven Brust--the early books are my favorites as well, but I thought he cranked up the volume again in Issola and Dzur and am curious to see where we go next.
Thanks ... ... know who the brand new ones are, but here are my classics in the field of fantasy:
Nina Kiriki Hoffman
Tim Powers
Steven Brust
P. C. Hodgell
Guy Gavriel Kay
Jane Lindskold (try Changer, Legends Walking, and Child of a Rainless Year--the wolf series didn't do as much for ... Favourites discovered (though not necessarily published) last year:
breath and bone by carol berg
freedom and necessity by steven brust and emma bull
passage: the sharing knife book 3 by Lois McMaster Bujold
the outback stars by sandra mcdonald
sons of heaven by kage ... ... The first five books are quite good.
Diana Wynne Jones, whether Howl's Moving Castle or Dark Lord of Derkholm.
Steven Brust's Vlad series, starting with Jhereg. Three of the books in the series are a direct homage to Dumas, which might give you your lead-in.
All of these are ... ... Bujold's next book out is going to be in this story line. Also, although there is magic, I think you would like Steven Brust. The magic is sorcery, but it is not loosey-goosey magic, and it is not the primary focus. Try Jhereg and see if you have a taste for it. Very good world ... ... to enjoy! I don't see any Bujold on your list--try Shards of Honor and move on, they just get better. I also recommend Steven Brust--start with Jhereg ... but Dark Lord of Derkholm sends me into stitches every time), I'd suggest the Vlad Taltos books starting with Jhereg by Steven Brust and Lois McMaster Bujold starting with The Warrior's Apprentice for the humor, and going back for the first two books after you are hooked on Miles. I loved War for the Oaks, which is very much urban fantasy. The only other work of hers I've read is Freedom and Necessity, a historical novel written in collaboration with Steven Brust. So I have the impression that her books are very different from one another. I haven't read Territory yet, though I will certainly seek it out. I recommend War for the Oaks (urban fantasy) and Freedom and Necessity, an epistolary historical novel she cowrote with Steven Brust. It's a leisurely read; if you have read and enjoyed Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell you ... I recommend Freedom and Necessity, by Steven Brust and Emma Bull. It is set in England in the mid 1800s and is similar to Susanna Clark's work in its density and use of language. The plot and characters reveal themselves through letters and the occasional newspaper clipping. It's probably too ... How about Steven Brust and his Vlad Taltos series? Start with Jhereg. Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos series (start with Jhereg. Elizabeth Moon especially her Hunting Party Series.
Patricia Wrede both her Lyra series and her Dragons series.
Terry Pratchett's Vimes books in the Discworld series, and also the Tiffany Aching books.
Nina Kiriki Hoffman All ... One of the best romance scenes ever is in Freedom and Necessity by Steven Brust & Emma Bull. The rest of the book is excellent, too! Freedom and Necessity by Steven Brust and Emma Bull. I'm enjoying the narrative technique (the novel is told through a series of letters written between characters). I'm also a fan of both authors, so picking it up was a no-brainer. ... on the others plotlines.
The only other novel it reminds me of is Steven Brust and Emma Bull's collaboration. Freedom and Necessity though this is a lot lighter.
khrister -
Thanks for the suggestion of Freedom and Necessity. I have all of Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos books and Emma Bull's War for the Oaks is an urban fantasy favorite of mine. I had no idea they wrote a book together! It's going on my "To Be Purchased ASAP" list right away. ... volume, her books are stand-alone novels.)
