If you've read and like Eddings then I would suggest Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar books, starting with Magician. There's also Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time which starts with The Eye of the World.
Edit for touchstones I would certainly suggest reading Magician it is one of the defining works of Sword and Sorcery fantasy. It is much closer to Eddings, than Erickson, but this is a difference in style rather than quality. If you like this, then read some of the others. They are loosely grouped in trilogies, and ... I wasn't impressed with Magician. It was dramatic enough to be a page-turner, but I felt like Feist had scooped up creatures and characters from Lord of the Rings and dropped them into this book. Overall, I thought it was pretty dull and didn't continue with the series. However, I'm not a big fan ... Even though Magician remains one of my favourite books I'd say it's aimed more at the younger end of the fantasy scale. I certainly wouldn't compare it to George R.R. Martin or Steven Erikson (I've not read any of the others so can't give a comparison). Perhaps for style I'd liken it ... ... for next year's reading challenge, in order of year of publication:
1 Pawn of Prophecy,David Eddings (1982)
2 Magician, Raymond E Feist (1982)
3 The Dragonbone Chair, Tad Williams (1988)
4 Assassin's Apprentice, Robin Hobb (1995)
5 King's Dragon, Kate Elliott (1997)
6 Col ... ... and quite an unusual magic!
I'd add recommendation for:
curse of the mistwraith
lies of locke lamora
mistborn
magician
dragons of autumn twilight (ie Chronicles of dragonlance, the rest are dire)
or try the deathgate cycle by the same authors.
and Caroll Berg's work I've ... Fantasy based favourites:
lord of the rings
curse of the mistwraith
harry dresden
thomas covenant
magician (but not the sequels in this case)
born to exile
A lot of Pratchett's work, but not all, and I can never choose which 1 would be favourite.

Black Company, Glen Cook
Pawn of Prophecy, David Eddings
King's Dragon, Kate Elliott
Magician, Raymond E Feist
Assassin's Apprentice, Robin Hobb

The Briar King, J Gregory Keyes
The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch
T ... To all who suggested Rowling, I read the first Harry Potter book many years ago, so that's out.
Magician sounds like it might be worth a go. As does the Kate Elliott one. I understand the 3rd book of the Abercrombie series is due out next year, so it sort of sneaks into qualification. The Bria ... What about Raymond E. Feist's Magician? I didn't think too highly of the sequels, but the first book was quite fun and quite inventive. 66. Magician by Raymond E Feist (08/08/09)
Feist’s first novel, written in 1982, and the first volume of the Riftwar saga.
As other reviewers have noted here, it’s easy to criticise this for the genre clichés (e.g., the orphan protagonist, the coming of age tale, the dwarven mines etc), ... ... by Janet Evanovich - should be nice and easy reading and Silverthorn by Raymond E Feist - the sequel to the Magician, as promised. I've nearly finished the Magician by Raymond E. Feist.
To be followed shortly after by Silverthorn, and so on.
I have had this series recommended to me by quite a few fantasy lovers, so I am embarking on the epic journey.
Though I have to agree with some of the review comments about ... ... Empire by Raymond E Feist and Janny Wurts. I wonder why it's taken me so long to actually read these? I loved Magician (the forerunner to this series) and still count it as one of my favourite books and have read pretty much all the other books from this setting so why not these ... ... started off with a short one to get me going.
1. Visions of Sugar Plums by Janet Evanovich.
Currently reading Magician by Raymond E. Feist, close to finishing though, and I know I will then be stuck on a very large number of sequels! I always think of Magician, Diamond Throne and Dragon Lance Autumn Twilight first when I think of fantasy novels. Those were my big three I read them all around the same time. By the time I finished those three series there Fantasy had its claws in me good and tight. After that Wizards Fir ... ... could almost be classed as historical fiction if you remove some elements and may be a good starting place for you.
Magician by Raymond E. Feist would be another possible starter for you. It's not too complex but if you enjoy this one then there are other volumes in the series that ... ... book!
Malazan series by Steven Erikson starting with Gardens of the Moon - very good, but somewhat heavy going.

Magician - lots and lots of really quick reading books, not finished
curse of the mistwraith 8 books now and still going, still superb at book 4 which is as far as I've ... Magician by Raymond Feist ... Unfortunately the ones I've seen have been given to second-rate artists who bodge it up. I like what's gone so far with the Magician graphic novels, but some of the others are poor. The Pride and Prejudice one, for example, is not particularly good - they have the look quite wrong, by my ... There are tons of them - either explicit or not.
Raymond Feist's Magician is based upon his homebrew RPG world - not very interesting as the RPG stuff wasn't published.
There are novels based on the Delta Green RPG stuff. Loads of Warhammer stuff. There are also novels based on Shadowrun, ... ... list and the definitions in at the end of each book as part of our reading assignments.
For suggestions in Fantasy try Magician by Ray Feist, Melanie Rawn and her Dragon Prince series, The Belegariad series, which are coming in touchstones as Pawn of Prophecy as the first suggestion ... The Riftwar (and successive series) by Feist starting with Magician is something I can always go back to and fits most of the OP's requirements. Ra ... ... in that order, only the first two are a bit rubbish.
More series I've enjoyed:
Revelation Space
Legend
Magician Every fantasy fan should read at least the first (two if your USian) book.
Isavalta
And i want to read more of Carol berg's works too.
This is probably my most re-read fantasy books list:
Magician by Feist and the rest of the Riftwar series
Myth series by Asprin
Dragonlance by Weis & Hickman
Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan
Sword of Truth by Goodkind
I will tend to read an ongoing series from ... Today I read Wolverine: Origin and Magician: Apprentice, Vol 2 (both graphic novels), and started on Was by Geoff Ryman.
I really enjoyed Wolverine (one of my alltime favourite characters). His origin story is very clever.
Was is still in a confusing state for me. It's not quite settled ... ... have mixed draconic and human blood and she explores the conflict this causes within him.
Also some dragons in Magician by Raymond E. Feist, acting as the mounts of the Valheru. ... Eddings, The Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander, The Riddle-Master by Patricia McKillip, Shannara by Brooks, and The Riftwar series by Feist.
I'd also recommend the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane and others, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment. ... group the first instance together, whilst separating abridgements.

Magician by Raymond E. Feist 11 -- magician ... appear (and thus conclude) again.
Dabel brothers publications are responsible for the Magician comics, based on Feist's Magician novel.
The art in that is terrible, though I am stil collecting the series.
I finished Magician which was quite good. I didn't think it was as amazing as a lot of its proponents say, but it was an enjoyable read, and the slight clumsiness of it can be put down to it being Feist's first novel. Fantasy is very hard to write well.
Now reading The House at Riverton ... ... series where I've re-read the entire series at the release of each new installment,
Lord of the rings
foreigner
Magician
Master of whitestorm

However I woudn't say they were the best 5, although they are all worthy contenders.
Rainbow Six was good, I can recommend it for those who like that kind of thing.
Now reading Magician by Raymond E Feist. ... Chronicles (though not the annotated version, I admit). That said, I've a few series I'm keeping: Raymond Feist's Riftwar (which I still love) and his Serpentwar Saga (which can be really dreadful) and Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth, though I may just hold on to the first book, ... ... repetitive. Belgariad was very good, as well as the Sparrohawk books.
Raymond E Feist was also good some time ago. Magician is still the best standalone fanntasy novel I have ever read.
Bonehunters and Reaper's Gale were good reads. Now waiting in anticipation for the next one.
... Now that we've got a series field to play with anyone know what the overarching series name should be?
Magician
Just magician 1 -24
The rift series?
I know each trilogy belongs in a subseries but there should be a total series name too?
More generally when not otherwise specified do ... I keep multiple copies of Raymond Feist's Magician and Frank Herberts's Dune (touchstone not working). Usually fine hardback copies and paperback reading copies. Magician by Feist was printed in either a one book format or a 2 book which would affect whether it was part of a trilogy or a 4 part series. So with plain Magician it is a trilogy (Riftwar Saga) ... Wheel of Time is definitely a great, The first 3 are probably the 'best' then followed by number 11 and the prequel
Magician/ Magician: Apprentice & Magician: Master by Raymond Feist
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman
Daughter of the Empire by Raymond Feist and our Janny ... ... 58
Non-fiction 8
looks likes there's a few crossover genre in there.
#68 how do the Janny/feist ones compare to Magician? I keep meaning to buy them but haven't got around to it yet.
... with Ships of merior I think.
plus a dito on all of #9 though I'm not so keen on Kay. And another ditto on Feist - Magician is the first and best. And Stephen R. Donaldson though he tends to be a bit dark for some tastes. Innocent mage
and the sequel Awakened mage
Magician
Morgaine Saga
Master of Whitestorm
Chronicles of Thomas Covenant
edit - gah how could I forget A Wizard of Earthsea
everything tagged green dragon
Or look in all the threads ... All of C j Cherryh's works and Janny Wurts and maybe some of Raymond E. Feist's - Magician is definetly worthwhile, some of the later works maybe not. Perhaps hate is too strong a word. Intense disappointment is how I'd describe my reaction to Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master which struck me as pretty dull, despite having several people tell me they were good fantasy. Feist also managed to sour me on "ripping good yarn," which I ... ... read them all? Any complete howlers in there worth avoiding? Any particularly special, worth making an extra effort for? Magician is possibly somewhat of a high standard to use as a benchmark? Raymond Fiest's Magician was a big influence as well as Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks. Also, I have a fond remembrance of Roger Zelazny's Nine Princes in Amber. ... Alexander's Black Cauldron, Mary Stewart's Once and Future King and then eventually find the Belgariad and Feist's Magician in their school library. ... 9) Magician by Raymond Feist
A thick, but good read. It starts as many fantasy stories have, a orphaned youth with more to him than meets the eye. The characters were engaging, and the plot was fairly easy to follow despite the book's length and the number of characters to keep track of.
... ... inclusion for those fantasy staples of other races, dwarves, trolls, dragons etc.
I'd probably do a high magic fantasy - Magician say, something swords and sorcery range - Stormbringer or Jhereg perhaps. One or more cross-over things, Fantasy-noir - Thraxas and contemporary fantasy/horro ... Shame that Dracula is poor though..... completely with you on Tolkien
I'd go for Magician by Feist
for the whole small child to hero plot. Although the magic isn't well described so maybe we need a better magic system author?
Definetly needs to be a work on the faerie, but I'm not sure ...
