It is 1903, and Moon Shadow lives in China with his mother; a few months before Moon Shadow was born, his father, Windrider, left for America, the Land of the Golden Mountain, to earn money which he sends back to his family in China. Now Windrider has sent for the eight-year-old Moon Shadow to join him. When Moon Shadow meets his father, he finds out Windrider's true dream, to fly, and slowly he grows to believe in Windrider's dream, even though it's keeping them from sending for Moon Shadow's mother. I wish Yep had explored that issue a little more, but overall, I liked the book's historical and cultural details very much and probably will read more of Yep's historical fiction (although I like his fantasy more). ( )This book is awsome i almost felt like i was in the story with the boy he worked with his uncle who saved everyone but died in the end but still he tries very hard. You almost felt his pain through the pages it tells you about a whole new life how people see it differently. My kids read this in school; I inherited it for my bookshelf and since I like to read everything I put on the bookshelf....It is actually pretty good. I thought it was set in China but it is set in San Francisco around 1903-1910. An interesting time for San Francisco so good historical fiction. It does move slow until about 1906 and things start moving.... To get it out of the way, those who expect a complex plot, a page-turner, or any steady pace of hubbub will frankly be disappointed. Too many books cater to that shallow fast-lane already. This story dares to be different - it proceeds like a native bedtime story, or a stroll alone through quiet places at sunset; Elegant in its simplicity and unique perspective, and especially significant in the way it can touch the hearts of those who can see beyond a brainwashed world, and dare to dream. I found this Newberry Honor book to be slow and uninteresting at times. The story is about a young Chinese boy who joins his father in California during the early 1900s. Although it was nice to read a story that portrays Chinese as intelligent and hardworking, this doesn't make up for the slowness of the story. no reviews | add a review
