In the meantime, was excited to finally pick up Dark Places by Gillian Flynn at the library. I had a ... Got it! The Conroy book iis Lords of Discipline and it was wonderful!!!!!!!
Carolyn ... I mean, we have to take into account that it's a community read - and lots of little old ladies live in Lincoln, NE, haha. The Lords of Discipline was in the running for a while (one of my faves from our list), but we cut it because of the bad language and violence. ... writer--the worst combination of pretentiousness and a tin ear. Must have been a terrible dancer.
I've only read The Lords of Discipline by Pat Conroy, but he's no ballerina either. He's guilty of the same crimes as Steinbeck and Bradbury: his sentences are all seized up by the ... ... little above, rstuckey made a great recommendation for a couple other Conroy titles. I am going to look out for a copy of The Lords of Discipline.
I enjoyed the movie but the book was so much more engrossing!!

I got into him when my dad gave me his autobiography of his college basketball career called My Losing Season which is very good as well. It gives you an insight to some of his recurring themes in his novel. ... I look forward to some others by him, though I only have Beach Music in my library for now. I am most interested in Lords of Discipline. Have you read that one?
Gotta go search out your 75'er thread and star ya! Looking at your profile, I see you are a new Lt'er. We both have King ... Didn't read PRINCE OF TIDES but I enjoyed two other Pat Conroy books, THE LORDS OF DISCIPLINE and THE GREAT SANTINI, when I read them (many moons ago).
I think that PRINCE OF TIDES is a very odd book to assign to a high school class. The other two I mentioned would make far better choices.
... Around the time I was a freshman in high school, there was a faction trying to get the school board to remove The Lords of Discipline from school libraries. Amid all the general uproar, the major effect that this had was all the kids trying to get their hands on a copy to see what was in it! Not read recently, but I remember being quite shaken by The Lords of Discipline by Pat Conroy.
At the time I read it, I was still remembering the horrors of the Viet Nam War. The book made me consider how deeply "the military" secretly maintains control. It's a very frightening read...e ...
