I have a degree in history and this book was hilarious, of course I was always a fan of Dave Barry's columns. Great use of snarky footnotes and quite brilliant to simplify it all down to only one date to remember. There are a lot of inside jokes if you know the real history (or at least what was taught in school). Reminds me of another favorite book I own, 1066 and All That for British history. ( )

The best history of the US I've ever read. Or at least the most entertaining. The parts that happened during my lifetime were the most hilarious, probably because I knew what he was referring to. ( )

I have read this book multiple times and occasionally pick it up to read passages here and there, and it never gets less funny. I giggle uncontrollably until the people around me stare at me like I'm a lunatic. It is non-stop hilarity from beginning to end, including the introduction and even the index. All of Dave Barry's books are hilarious, but this is definitely my favorite. ( )

Dave Barry is a genius. I really enjoyed his column (and am sad that has to be past tense), and if you do too definitely pick up his books. And if you do, pick up this one. Whether you're a history nerd or not doesn't matter. And he certainly makes you feel better about yourself for not being one. If you've never heard of Dave Barry or are only vaguely familiar, you're in for a treat. He kind of rocks. Makes a great bathroom read or a full on read too. ( )

Damn funny book. I had never read anything by Dave Barry before, but now that I know how important he is to (mis)understanding American history, I will have to read everything he wrote.

Book description

Amazon.com (ISBN 0449904628, Paperback)

Dave runs American history through the wringer, and comes up with some wonderfully warped formulations. (The Vikings, for example, "were extremely rugged individuals whose idea of a fun time was to sail over and set fire to England, which in those days was fairly easy to ignite because it had a very high level of thatch, this being the kind of roof favored by the local tribespeople...") Covering pre-Columbian days through the dawn of the Bush administration, Dave Barry Slept Here is the funniest thing to hit this great nation since the Smoot-Hawley Tariff of 1930.
