This was probably one of my favorite books that I was read to as a child. This is so sweet about a little girl that lives in an orphanage and about her adventures. This is a great book for young girls to read and is somewhat timeless. Although this does not have any educational background, this is a classic book that I think all little girls should read at some point in their childhood.

This story about a fearless little French orphan girl named Madeline who is loved very much by her pears. In this story Madeline has appendicitis and is rush to the hospital. The other little orphan girls see all the toys she has for her bravery in surgery and the interesting scar on her stomach. In the end all of Madeline’s friends want their appendix taking out too. Miss Clavel the nun reminds them that they should be thankful for their well being.

This is a classic story of a little french girl who wakes up with appendicitis in the middle of the night and how her friends are there for encouragement. I love the rhyming “In an old house in Paris/ That was covered with vines/ Lived twelve little girls in two straight lines.” I also just love the illustrations and story. Though it is short it easily transports you to Paris. I think grades k-2 would just love this book for leisure reading. ( )

Madeline is the classic tale of the young girl who wakes up in the middle of the night with appendicitis. This cute story of how her young friends support and encourage her through this scary time is a favorite for many children. It is also a great illustration of routine, as the girls break their bread, brush their teeth, and go to bed every night, and every morning go out in two straight lines. The story is simple, but is a great example of friendship even at a young age. To explore more about Madeline and her friends, as well as to find additional resources, visit www.madeline.com ( )

Book description
Bemelmans' rhythmic rhymes make this book a great one for a readaloud with preschoolers or primary-age children. The story is suspenseful enough to be interesting, but not too scary; the illustrations (mainly in tones of yellow) not only support the story, but also offer a view of Paris. A list at the end of the book identifies the Paris locations that are illustrated.

Poor Miss Clavel! In "an old house in Paris that was covered with vines," Miss Clavel oversees the education of 12 little girls, the littlest of whom is the mischievous Madeline. Despite her size, she fearlessly pooh-poohs the tiger in the zoo and frightens Miss Clavel with her adventurous antics. When she awakens the entire house with her plaintive cries in the middle of the night, Doctor Cohn whisks the appendicitis-stricken Madeline off to the hospital where, some two hours later, she awakens to find a scar on her stomach! The scar (not to mention the flowers, toys, and candy given to Madeline by her father) proves quite interesting to the rest of Miss Clavel's charges when they make a special trip to visit her. Ludwig Bemelmans's lilting rhymes are music to children's ears, and the quirky, oddly perfect drawings of the girls in "two straight lines" lend an enticing Parisian flavor to this perennial children's favorite.
