This is a short chapter book collection of stories about Patrick the bear, and his adventures following a move to a new town. Some issues surrounding single parenthood are raised, as Patrick and his mother were abandoned by his father, and decided to move alone; Patrick's mother eventually has to take a job to support then, leaving Patrick at home. Some other themes include exploring a new home, adjusting to a new school and making friends. Hayes's stories are interesting and funny, though not particularly memorable. Patrick could use more character development-- traits to make him unique in the sea of talking animals in children's literature. Another personal dislike: the illustrations. I found them to be just a little creepy (see the eyes on Patrick's friend Ted, or the moon-faces of the girls Hannah and Maria). They do break up the text, but add little to the story otherwise. As this is an older title, I would not recommend it as an acquisition. If you already have it in your collection, perhaps consider weeding! ( ) no reviews | add a review
