The trap had taken a kwevit - a fat one, too. - "Sweet Waters" For every terror, a joy. - "Naratha's Shadow" On Sintia, it's the dreaming that first marks a witch. - "A Matter of Dreams" Cyra hurried through the bustle of the pre-dawn, head down, and face hidden. - "Phoenix" In the city of Iravati on the world of Skardu, there lived a scholar who had three daughters, and they were the light and comfort of his elder years. - "Veil of the Dancer" It was spring again. - "This House" The first thing they told him when he emerged from the catastrophic healing unit was that his wife had died in the accident. - "Changeling" He woke, panting, out of a snare of dreams in which he over and over ran to succor a child, hideously suspended over a precipice, the slender branch clutched in terrified small fingers bending toward break beneath the slight weight - "Heirloom" The turtles had canceled, the tidy kill-fee deposited to ship's funds before the message had hit her in-box. - "Quiet Knives" It was snowing, of course. - "Lord of the Dance" | |

Book description |
This short story collection contains: - "Sweet Waters" - A Scout survey pilot is stranded on a low-tech world, and must live among its people to stay close to his ship, and its beacon.
- "Naratha's Shadow"
- "A Matter of Dreams" - told from the point of view of one of the three lives that Priscilla and Moonhawk saved, before Priscilla left Sintia. (Priscilla's part of the story picks up in "Moonphase", in Liaden Universe Companion Volume One.)
- "Phoenix" - A story about Belansium, the creator of the planetscape artwork that Miri admires so much.
- "Veil of the Dancer" - Part of the backstory of Natesa the Assassin.
- "This House" - A Healer with an unusual talent, as a matter of last resort, is asked to treat a woman suffering from partial amnesia - she has forgotten everything about her lifemate, but nothing else. The catch is that her lifemate is the Healer's ex-lover.
- "Changeling" - How Shan yos'Galan met Ren Zel dea'Judan, after the latter's death.
- "Heirloom" - how the family first learned of Nova's unusual Talent - with a suggestion of why Pat Rin chose to be a rug merchant on Surebleak.
- "Quiet Knives" - part of the Juntavas' side of the story of their Chairman's negotiations with Edger in Carpe Diem.
- "Lord of the Dance" - Takes place after I Dare, and addresses the question of whether or not Pat Rin is a pilot.

Included here, among others, is the tale of how Ren Zel became clanless and a cute story of how everyone finally gets Pat Rin to admit that he is a jump pilot after all. ( )
