ELSEWORLDS was a great concept--take the core of a character but then play around with that character in a new setting or conceit. Holy Terror's mildly confusing for its alternate history with a religious spin, but this is one of the stronger "Alternate-Batman" stories ever done (the best, in my opinion, being Gotham By Gaslight). The cameos and world-changes to many other DC heroes makes this a story that thinks about all the ramifications of altering history, not just hyper-focusing on one character, as so often is the case. Highly recommended for anyone who likes Batman or alternate histories. An interesting "Batman" graphic novel, which postulates what might have happened if Bruce Wayne had lived in an America which never separated from England, in which the Church and State were inseparable, all-powerful and correspondingly corrupt. Here, Bruce Wayne's mission of vengeance begins when he learns that it was the Church which ordered the death of his parents years ago, for their secret efforts in combatting the terrors of the Church's edicts. He joins the Church, while secretly ferretting out its secrets. The most powerful segment comes when he discovers the Church's secret experiments on various powerful beings which have arisen: a super-speedster, a merman, - and a Green Man, a super-powerful being whom they had to kill with a rock from his home planet when his power could not be controlled - and whose demise rouses a shapeless sorrow in this Batman, as though the hope of the world had died. Quite an interesting look at what might have been. no reviews | add a review
