Rouw en melancholie vormen de grondslag van wat we nu depressiviteit noemen. Wij aanvaarden en begrijpen deze gevoelens, die nochtans een grote invloed hebben op ons innerlijk leven, onvoldoende. Volgens de Britse psychoanalyticus Darian Leader wordt depressiviteit door moderne medici daarom verkeerd geïnterpreteerd. Hierdoor geraken we nooit bevrijd van het idee dat we lijden aan een ziekte die depressiviteit heet en leren we nooit inzien dat zwaarmoedigheid een belangrijke functie vervult. Hij houdt een pleidooi vóór het doorleven van ongeluk en tégen het hedendaagse streven naar geluk en helpt zo de lezer beter inzicht te verwerven in reacties op verlies. ( )
