A re-telling of Jane Eyre set in space. She did a really good job meshing the 19th century novel feel with the setting, but it really is Jane Eyre. She doesn't change the story substantively at all, so if you're in the mood for Jane, pick this up. ( )

I really liked this sci-fi spin on Jane Eyre, and the fact that Jenna was a careerwoman with advanced technological training. ( )

Jane Eyre as space opera! It almost worked, but I wanted some more background on how the 19th century moral codes were reproduced far into the future. There is a class system of people with and without or with partial citizenship based on money. I couldn't figure out how the female "reputation" issue worked - unless it was also a class issue rather than a gender inequity thing. I was entertained by Jenna's fervent prayers to a Goddess of Panequity. (October 16, 2004) ( )

I love Sharon Shinn's other books and I love Jane Eyre, but this was just too directly a retelling. I like retellings to veer a bit from the original story, but all the big plot twists were here in the order they appear in the original, so I knew what was going to happen the whole time. It was, literally, Jane Eyre in space. Yeah. ( )

Well... certainly not the best Shinn I've read so far. And, though the mechanics of Jane's story are adhered to, the soul is not. Fortunately I've only read the classic once, and so am not devoted to it. And therefore I was willing to be charmed by this. And so I was. YMMV. ( )
