Just finished Scalzi's Zoe's Tale. I don't think it was pushed as YA scifi, but it certainly has all the attributes imesho.
Also, finally got around to reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. Rather amazing artwork.

Also, finally got around to reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. Rather amazing artwork. I read Scalzi's Zoe's Tale. It's categorized as Scifi, but really there's not much 'sci'. Fun read though. ... book in the Tir Alainn trilogy. Story arc escalates to war, not as strong as the other books in the series.

Also still reading Collapse. A bit slow at times, but still very interesting. ... has caught up with the book in places.
Beggars in Spain so far feels a bit like another book I recently read, Scalzi's Zoe's Tale - in style and tone, they are both fast-paced easy reads with a focus on the characters.
EDIT - I just reread my last sentance and have to laugh - ANYTHING ... #30: rosje: Just started The Last Colony after reading the first two. Good to hear your positive reaction. Zoe's Tale apparently is the next one. Finished Neuromancer (sadly unimpressed), sweeping through Zoe's Tale (40 pages in and I'm enjoying it immensely) before I start on Beggars in Spain for the group read.
I think Scalzi is maybe a little bit like candy. ... I enjoyed the first two, Old Man's War and The Ghost Brigades, and have been reading good things on LT about the 4th, Zoe's Tale. ... Zoe's Tale is totally fine as a standalone. John Scalzi wrote it with that intention and I think he succeeded, as I hadn't read any of his other work when I read Zoe's Tale.

Reading all the comments, I am probably the only person who actively disliked One More Year. Bleh. To tell the truth, I couldn't even finish it. It's only the second book I've ... I finished When We Were Romans yesterday, and couldn't decide between Zoe's Tale... DoB's glowing about it and she was right about Gargoyle... or Confessions of a Contractor.
Well, sex and fun won out. I started Contractor last night. :-D ... a woman who'd made that mistake.
It's a fun read... but it came off the top and not the bottom. I was going to pick Zoe's Tale on the emphatic reco from DevourerofBooks (she was right about Gargoyle after all), but Contractor just seemed like more fun. I'll read Zoe next. ... Okay, I LOVED John Scalzi's Zoe's Tale, and I don't even like Science Fiction. My review isn't going up until Wednesday, but I thought it was fantastic. I may actually have to read more of his stuff (I added a bunch to my bookmooch wishlist).
I also enjoyed Eric Van Lustbader's Fir ... ... has joined the LT Early Reviewer program, and are offering twenty copies of the next book in the Old Man's War series - Zoe's Tale. Of course I threw my name in the hat, and hope to snag a copy, so I don't know why I'm telling the competition about it... must be my good deed for the day. ... to work in the nursery at church this morning but no kids showed up. I was a bit worried, because I knew I had left Zoe's Tale at home. Luckily, though, I found American Savior in my purse. The beginning is a little off-putting, but I think I'll love it. I'm about 1/3 of the way through Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi and I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would (science fiction isn't one of my favorite genres). I'm hoping I can finish it (or nearly finish) it today. DoB: I've got Zoe's Tale on mine still, but I'm afraid to get anything off the bottom for fear of an ARC-alanche! I'm FINALLY starting Zoe's Tale, which I've had forever, to get it read before the release date. ... Must have Tears of the Desert, after reviewing The Translator and hearing Daoud speak at Powell's books. Must have Zoe's Tale to complete my Scalzi trilogy; finally, science fiction is in the list, and more than one!

As ... I just finished up Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi. It was great mindless fun like the rest of Scalzi's books. It was entertaining and a fast read, but there are only really light science fiction elements in it. The dialogue is great though!
Overall, it was an enjoyable read. ... Bakker creates for the different races, is the best I've ever seen in a fantasy novel.
Next up is John Scalzi's Zoe's Tale, which I hope is as fun and entertaining as his previous books. pstotts -
I'm glad to hear that about Zoe's Tale. I have that ARC as well. I'm not familiar with Scalzi's work and the cover of that book isn't so inviting. However, if it is entertaining, light and fun, I'll give it a go. I received the ARC of Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi today. I've read about half of it so far, and it is as entertaining, light and fun as his previous novels. I finished Zoe's Tale and really enjoyed it. I don't like very much SF, but the author captured a teenage girl's voice quite well (having a teenage girl in the house to compare to). Now if I could only figure out why it got sent to me! I don't remember asking for it from any source.

I'm close to finishing Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi. This book is a great read so far, told from the viewpoint of a teenage girl. Since I have one of those strange and exotic creatures living ... Another 4 in the mail today.

Farewell My Queen I received Zoe's Tale this past weekend, as well, and just received a notice from HarperCollins FirstLook that I wasn't selected to review a book that I don't remember requesting. I thought that I had requested a different book this month. **shrugs** I got my Howard Smith's I, Robot yesterday, as well as Zoe's Tale... I thought of my dad right away, too, lenoreva. I did end up getting Zoe's Tale and my dad pounced on it. So far June's been a read-for-stress month. I'm waiting for my July bookclub book to arrive.
