Urban fantasy: Jim Butcher's Dresden Files are great fun. ... I thought they were boring, but the audiobooks were mesmerizing. Dale is a genius.
James Marsters totally ruined the Dresden Files Series, by Butcher, for me. He sniffs through the whole think like he's trying to give the character a superiority complex which completely turned me off. The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher is good. Strong plot, action, little sex. some romance.
Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman. later books have more romance. no sex is described.
Nightside series by Simon R. Green. action, but little romance.

There's werewolf principle which is very good, but it's distinctly and SF werewolf, and very different from what you may have been expecting. ... I'd suggest the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs which is more urban fantasy than romance. Also, the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher has werewolves in it but they are not always prominent characters.

To me Harry Dresden, along with the Nightside books, and Conner Grey, The Changeling Detective agency etc. are all more or less "formulaic fantasy PI type pulp", just as Mercy Thompson, Anita Blake, Merry Gentry etc. are all more or less formulaic chick-lit type pulp. Doesn't mean I ... 30. Fool Moon by Jim Butcher
The second of the Dresden Files novels, as good as the first one, which is great, because now I'm rather confident that the rest of the series probably is worth reading too. I'd certainly say that the Harry Dresden series is a prime urban fantasy example. I've always felt it is anything involving the supernatural/paranormal set in a present day/real life setting.
I've just read a newish urban fantasy that I really enjoyed and thought I'd throw the name out there. ... I second AnnieMod's recommendations on this: Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series, Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, and China Mieville's The City and the City.

Storm Front was violent too, but it wasn't particularly gory in my opinion. Owned but unread: Jim Butcher, Fool Moon

Fool Moon by Jim Butcher is the second book in the Dresden Files, a series of thriller/mysteries set in Chicago, featuring the city's only "out" wizard as the sleuth.
Someone help me here. These are compulsively readable books, and I grant Butcher full props ... >5 Berly, ewww. I was up with the goblins because I was reading Fool Moon. If you want to try an adult wizard in Chicago, the Harry Dresden books by Jim Butcher are fun. Storm Front is the first one. Again more faerie than tolkein elves would be some of Harry Dresden's adventures - Summer knight is I think the first time he's involved with them, and one of the best of the early stories. Worth reading the whole series though which starts with storm front

Fool Moon by Jim Butcher
Pretties and Specials by Scott Westerfeld trisweather - some examples of urban fantasy are the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry books by Laurell K. Well I picked up Fool Moon from the library yesterday and started it last night thinking I'd only read one or two chapters. Unfortunately I was unaware of the hex on the book that made me unable to put it down until I finished it. Now I want to read the next book, but it's checked out. So instead ... ... might freeze over, I hasten to add. I picked up six new books this week alone, plus one library book. Argh!
Finished Fool Moon and it was a **ripsnorter**. Poor old Harry Dresden managed several days without sleep fighting vicious werewolves. I was exhausted by the end myself! (Nothing ... ... Was tempted by Wolf Who Rules and Fool Moon, but will have to get those another time.... After finishing Fool Moon the other day I perversely decided to reread In the Company of Others right away.
It will definitely be some time before I pick up the next Dresden book. Entertaining, but like a light snack - tasty, but it won't sustain you.

Just finished Fool Moon, the second Harry Dresden mystery, and am torn between starting right away on the third in the series (Grave Peril) or reading one of the dozens of library books I have borrowed that are sitting on my shelf. *sigh* Decisions, decisions! Just finished Fool Moon and am madly in love (lust?) with Harry. As I said on another thread, even if Harry wasn't a powerful wizard, he'd be lovable. With his powers, he's irresistable! Anyway, while I liked Fool Moon a lot, I still like Storm Front (the only other of the series I've read) ... 66. Fool Moon by Jim Butcher. 4-1/2 stars.
