Amazon.com Book Description (ISBN 0809562812, Paperback)Weird Tales, the world's first fantasy magazine, launched the careers of legendary storytellers including H.P. Lovecraft and Ray Bradbury. Today, a new generation of authors keeps the weirdness flowing as the magazine stomps relentlessly into the 21st century: bizarre, gothic, soul-wrenching, and darkly hilarious. It's a woman who sells her house to a bear. It's a hardworking kid slaving away in the coal mines alongside a father who won't stay dead. It's a V8 engine hurling a car full of drunken rabble-rousers down rainy Wisconsin roads while a realm of ancient legend awaits. And it's a brain-eating zombie girl who's nonetheless a surprisingly good date... (Featuring stories by Carrie Vaughn, Barth Anderson, Holly Phillips, Richard Parks, Phil Brucato, Lisa Mantchev, Trent Hergenrader, Gerard Houarner, Paul E. Martens, Kurt Newton, Peadar O Guilin, and William Markly O'Neal.)(retrieved from Amazon Fri, 24 Apr 2009 07:58:09 -0400) The first test round has been closed. Bob Bodey's Body Parts - A real loser of a human being finds a gumball machine that dispenses body parts, which turn out to be a little too real. Gross and funny.
The Past Never Dies - The premise of a troubled young person who sees ghosts and the gruff retired detective who she's teamed up sounds pretty overdone. However, Holly Phillips' writing really makes the characters and their emotions salient. I'd definitely be interested in following these characters into other stories.
For Fear of Dragons - Pretty short piece about sacrificing virgins to dragons. I rather liked its rather subtle feminist take on the material.
The Drain - An interesting tale of cursed objects and vampirism. (
