1061 Melville Weston Fuller Chief Justice of the United States 1888-1910, by Willard L. King (read 12 Jul 1970) I suppose many would find this book dull. I liked it much. Fuller was born in Augusta, Maine, on Feb 11, 1833. He was admitted to the bar in 1855, moved to Chicago in 1856, served a very short time in the Illinois Legislature and then practiced law till Cleveland named him chief justice in 1888. He was confirmed by a vote of 41 to 20, and took his seat Oct 8, 1888. Only John M. Harlan was on the Court all the while Fuller was. The book would have been more interesting if I had read it beside a set of the U.S. Reports. But then I'd never have read it in less than two days. Fuller died at Sorrento, Maine, on July 4, 1910. The book was a little too laudatory, but very interesting anyway. ( )
