Suspense The Chase is a good story about a brilliant bank robber/murderer who thought that he had outfoxed the world. The brilliant thief thought that he was invincible. The chase took place on steam engines. The beginning of the book was past history which was tied to the 1950s. Interesting facts about operating a steam engine. Four stars were awarded to the book. SPOILERS I first read this book in 2009 - and have re-read it again. This is the first book in a new series by Clive Cussler - set in the early 1900s and starring a new character - Isaac Bell. This Novel takes place in the year 1906, in and around San Francisco. And which big event took place in 1906 in San Francisco? There are two guys - the bad guy is called the Butcher Bandit and the good guy is called Isaac Bell. Isaac is a detective and he has spent the last 2 years tracking down the Butcher Bandit. The Butcher Bandit robs banks and cold bloodedly kills everyone in the bank at the time he robs it and any other witnesses who can potentially ID or describe him. Isaac and his team of detectives start asking questions and manage to find two people who did see what happened and who were not killed. From there it was a long chase - literally - for Isaac to track down the bandit. Everything culminates down to the chase - a long chase by train from San Francisco on the day of the 1906 earthquake - up to the remote parts of Montana where the bandit planned to escape to Canada and live out his days free and rich. The weather and the geography of Montana plays a part in preventing that from happening. 44 years later the train is dug up from its watery grave and it is finally confirmed that the Butcher bandit died on that day and the money was still safe in the boxes. I enjoyed this story very much - just as much as I do the Dirk Pitt and Kurt Austin stories. But I have not yet read any other books in this series. I had purchased this book just to satisfy my curiosity. no reviews | add a review
