I was a bit nervous after reading many awful reviews, but I actually had trouble putting this one down! Although, I will say that the style was a lot different than the previous books. Granted, the author spent 10 years before picking up the story again, and her writing style has changed since then. I liked the story well enough. I rather felt that it was an introduction to the next book, and I don't think it's as solid as the others. There are a LOT of loose ends, and the ending wasn't as defined. Nonetheless it was still enjoyable. I loved that there were new kinds of insecurities in Alec and Seregil's relationship, causing the characters to show different sides of themselves and raise questions that have been previously ignored. The one thing I wasn't sure how I felt about was Sebrahn. The idea was interesting, but something about him felt terribly out of place. Perhaps it's just his ethereal appearance - it clashed badly with my vision of their traditional fantasy world. I really had trouble picturing it. But the "dragon" hint presented at the end definitely made me feel a lot better. I suspect I will warm up to him as more answers are revealed. All in all I think it was pretty good. Better than I thought it would be, and I have good faith that the next few books will be increasingly enjoyable. YES, it was very different, but the different wasn't bad. Another note - I finished this surprisingly fast. The font is considerably larger. I wasn't so put off by it since I was eager to finish it, but it took only took me two days to read it. The other ones took about a full week, reading at the same pace. I find that the different book design along with the different writing style disrupts the flow of the series a bit. It's still by FAR my favorite series, though! Can't wait for the next one, I have a feeling it will put this book under a new light. :) The fourth book in the series. Loved the first three, they were all absolutly amazing!!!!! This one, though it was still really good, wasn't on par with the others. I'd just like to say, what the heck is with this dragon child?! I feel like we haven't had enough of Seregil and Alec being together for them to now have a kid(dragon?) with them. But, as one of the other reviewers pointed out, I don't think he'll be around as a child for long so I'm ok with it. I would have liked to see more of Seregil and Alec together in this book but unfortunitly they spend most of it appart. I thought the argument they had regarding Alec getting a kid on a woman was good because it showed Alec has matured. I missed Beka and surprisingly, Thero. I wish there had been more development of Thero's charater because I think he has great potential. I can't wait for book 5, The White Road! Another in the Nightrunner series. Alec and Seregil are back in Rhiminee, bored by inactivity. But soon enough, they are sent on a mission, where they encounter great danger and very strange magic. A wonderful return to the Nightrunner series! The feeling of the book is different from the first three books that were written much earlier. But it is still a great read as Flewelling develops Seregil and Alec even further as their relationship continues to deepen with an added surprise. I spent most of the first part of the book on edge, wondering if the characters were going to get through their ordeal. Then I spent the rest of the book with my eyes as wide as saucers as Fleweling fleshes out Seregil's past. It's rather naughty and shocking but I loved it and I cannot wait for the next book in this series. no reviews | add a review

I found this book to be very interesting, and I can't wait to see where she goes with the next one. I feel like we are getting into very deep and exciting back story with this series. We are getting glimpses of history and cultures that were hardly mentioned in the other books.
Three books before this feature Alec and Seregil. The first two complete one story, the third stands alone, and a new book out soon should continue (finish?) this story. (
