This book is a really great introduction to Islam and Muhammad's impact on religion and the creation of the Koran and Five Pillars of Islam. Muhammad believed that everyone should be treated equally regardless of class, sex and race. He lead the prophets: Abraham, Moses and Jesus.

A truely unique experience to see the illustrations and read about the life of Mohammad. "In keeping with Islamic tradtion, the Propher Muhammad and his family have not been depicted in this book," following the the commandment, "Thous shalt not create graven images." Mohammad is shown as a golden flat shape, like a celestial being. Beautiful ( )

In this book, Demi tells the story of Muhammad, a prophet of Islamic religion. Within the story, Demi writes specific passages from the Koran using calligraphy. Demi’s beautiful illustrations depict Muhammad as a golden form; no physical features are given due to Muslim’s belief that artists cannot give an actual representation of Muhammad because people will worship Muhammad instead of God. Also, Demi uses miniature forms in her pictures because this is an early form of illustrating. Last, Demi uses colors such as gold, blues, reds and purples within in her illustrations.

Librarians and teachers can use this book to introduce the Islamic religion to a high school class, possibly a World History class. Students can discuss the similarities and differences between the world’s religions. In addition, they could discuss the traditions of Muslim. For example, the book does explain why Muslims pray 5 times a day. Librarians and educators would have to be careful because religion in schools can be controversial. Librarians and educators could send a note home explaining what they are doing in order to allow parents to opt their child out of that discussion if it makes the parent(s) uncomfortable.

Ages 7-11

Born in Mecca in 570 A.D., Muhammad lost both his parents at an early age and was raised by a grandfather and then by an uncle, who trained him as a businessman. Always thoughtful, honest, and sincere, he was often called upon by friends and neighbors to settle disputes. He was 40 years old when he received his first revelation from Allah, who called upon Muhammad to recite His words. These words were recorded as the Koran and became the foundation of the Islamic faith. Demi uses the intricate style of Persian miniatures with gold-leaf overlay to illustrate this respectful picture book biography of the man known throughout the Islamic world as The Prophet. This is a beautifully illustrated book for children which presents a very human and sympathetic picture of the prophet Muhammad, especially in relationship to Judaism and Christianity. It uses the Persian miniature form in illustrations that are whimsical in character.

Muhammad

is

the messenger of Islam.

Born in Mecca in the year 570, Muhammad grew into a sensitive and thoughtful man who believed deeply in the worship of one true god.

In his fortieth year, Muhammad experienced a revelation from the angel Gabriel that he, Muhammad, was the messenger of God. Over the next twenty-three years, he received many such revelations, all of which were written down by scribes at the time of revelation to become the Koran, the sacred scripture of Islam, a religion that is practiced by nearly one-quarter of the world's population and holds as its most sacred tenet that there is no god but God.

Through a clear text and stunning illustrations based upon those of traditional Islamic expression, the award-winning artist Demi here introduces the remarkable life of the Prophet Muhammad for young readers.
