Marian Keyes might be classified as Chick Lit, but her books tend to cover topics more suited to literary fiction, and This Charming Man is no different. This story covers such subjects as alcoholism, battered women and abusive relationships, rape, and political corruption and journalistic integrity, all told through the eyes of 4 women connected to one particular man. Throw in a handful of bizarre small town characters, and a whole lot of cross dressers, and you have a great story. It does take a little while to figure out what particular tale each woman is trying to tell, and there is a bit of a mystery to unravel, but this is an excellent read. Again combining light hearted chick lit fiction with a dark element, Keyes does not disappoint with this book. Her characters are as lively as ever, and you love the ones you're meant to, and despise the ones you're meant to. This is a fun, if sometimes heavy, read. Another winner from Marian Keyes, mixing humour with dark subject matter, this time about domestic violence. Reading this book was like chatting to a close friend. The characters are as strong here as in any of her books; the writing as fluid. Marian Keyes has not failed to impressed me yet again! Once more touching on heavy issues (this time domestic abuse and alcoholism) and managing to weave a funny and heart-warming story out of them, this book has a bit more mystery to it, and is hard to put down once I was on the roll. Another A plus! no reviews | add a review

With This Charming Man, Marian Keyes hits her stride as a novelist with her best novel yet, telling the stories of four women who are shaped by one man
Paddy de Courcy is Ireland's debonair politician, the "John F. Kennedy Jr. of Dublin." His charm and charisma have taken hold of the country and the tabloids, not to mention our four heroines: Lola, Grace, Marnie, and Alicia. But though Paddy's winning smile is fooling Irish minds, the broken hearts he's left in his past offer a far more truthful look into his character.
Narrated in turn by each woman, This Charming Man explores how their love for this one man has shaped their lives. But in true Marian Keyes fashion, this is more than a story of four love affairs. It's a testament to the strength women find in themselves through work, friendship, and family, no matter what demons may be haunting their lives. Depression, self-doubt, domestic abuse—each of these women has seen tough times in life, and it's through Keyes's wonderful storytelling ability that these subjects are approached with the appropriate tone and candor. Her deft touch provides a gripping story and, ultimately, a redemptive ending.

I finished the book and enjoyed most of the characters' sections from that point on, though Lola still drove me crazy. Not sure I'd recommend it, but if you find it lying around it might be worth the few hours it'd take to read. (
