1945. La fin de la guerre. Les Kurowski fuient l'Allemagne de l'Est où ils sont nés et passent à l'Ouest. Ils abandonnent tout : leur foyer, leurs biens, la petite fabrique de chaussures qui leur a donné l'aisance. Liés par un même destin, ils vont affronter un monde nouveau en sachant qu'ils peuvent compter les uns sur les autres. En quelques années, ils montent une nouvelle fabrique de chaussures. Le père, revenu de Russie, où il était prisonnier, s'est mis au travail à son tour. Toutes les difficultés d'ordre politique, ils les surmontent avec habileté et l'on assiste à l'extraordinaire ascension des Kurowski. La petite affaire familiale est devenue une énorme usine à succursales multiples. Les Kurowski sont les enfants chéris du « miracle allemand ». A travers la vie mouvementée d'une famille allemande, Konsalik nous fait revivre, avec vigueur et talent, ces années passionnantes de l'après-guerre. ( )

Een uit de door de Russen bezette zone van Duitsland gevluchte familie bouwt zich in het Westen een nieuw bestaan op. De grote problemen weten zij te overwinnen door hun hechte onderlinge band. Als de vader uit krijgsgevangenschap teruggekeerd is, groeit het voorzichtig opgezette schoenreparatiebedrijf uit tot een geweldig concern. Wanneer in deze welvarende periode tegenslagen van persoonlijke aard komen, worden ook deze, dankzij hun grote gehechtheid aan elkaar, overwonnen. ( )
