Excellent graphic novel as told and illustrated by Will Eisner. ( )

A collection of graphic stories by the master, Will Eisner, from his tours of duty in Korea and Vietnam for P.S. Magazine, an army publication. he started. The stories are by turn poignant, ironic and cynical. I think my favorite, even though it is the only schmaltzy one (or because of this), is "Hard Duty", about a hulking brute of a soldier, angry at being taken off the front and losing his chance to kill the enemy, who nevertheless is the only soldier to take his off time to go to the local orphanage and entertain the outcast children of the local women and American soldiers. But all the stories are fine and moving. ( )
