The Swiss Family Robinson - When I was little, I used to play the Swiss Family Robinson while I was sitting in my favorite tree.

Finally, I would take a book that I'd never heard of (preferably historical fiction) to keep with me and read when I got off ... ... of course Hook with Robin Williams, Peter Pan and the 1960s Disney version of Black Beard's Ghost to mention a few. Swiss Family Robinson had to deal with Pirates too. I was just thinking it might be fun to start a movie collection all about Pirates. I guess you can even include Six Days ... ... the Black Stallion, Indian Paint - yes, there is a theme there). But I have a strong memory of Heidi and The Swiss Family Robinson - perhaps those were remnants of my Swiss grandfather - as well as Jules Verne.
Swiss Family Robinson also has lots of educational passages in it. If I remember right, the author intentionally wrote it to teach about the skills used by the Robinsons in a way that boys would find interesting. How about Bridge to Terabithia? My teacher read that aloud in sixth grade. Any classics would do. Swiss Family Robinson is a wonderful story and read aloud. Farmer Boy, Cricket in Times Square, and Wind in the Willows. Oh, and what about James and the Giant Peach? ... there are soo many out there!! Some of my favorites are Cold Mountain, The Thirteenth Tale, Pride and Prejudice and Swiss Family Robinson. I'd have to say those were the top runners. I went absolutely crazy in the last two days. All from second hand shops or thrift stores:

When I was a kid, I'd start every summer vacation by rereading The Swiss Family Robinson and The Black Stallion, followed by all seven Chronicles of Narnia books. I've lost count how many times that came out to.
As an adult, I've read Dean Koontz's Strangers and Phantoms countless ... ... going to go to the library tomorrow and try to find some--probably going to have to request them though. Now I'm reading Swiss Family Robinson online.
#14 As to my reason for wanting the books, the other day I was listening to Dive by Sarah Brightman (which is a water themed album) and it ... ... Fisher on trans-tasman ocean voyage to NZ. Definitely strong female. No shipwreck though.
And of course the classic Swiss Family Robinson, is one of the first 'shipwrecked ont a desert island'. No strong female though... ... general rule is to try to read above their own reading level, however not to far above it. I tried reading the originial Swiss Family Robinson to my son when he was six. He was lost. I however, loved it and finished it on my own. I highly recommend it to all to read. Its fabulous. ... them, just saying, don't give up hope, children might even appreciate them better later in their lives.
Our family read Swiss Family Robinson and many others, but they preferred Jules Verne, Little House on the Prairie, Ralph Moodyetc. We did as many activities as we could around ... ...
We have quit a few. Although I too believe that reading above their level is important, reading something as difficult as Swiss Family Robinson is too hard. The enjoyment would be lost on the kids if the language is too hard or descriptive, as in most of the classics. The books have text on ... ... Charlotte Mason, which spurred this on to begin with!
Charlotte Mason says to read unabridged versions of classics like Swiss Family Robinson to a 6 year old. That would not fly here! Lol.
The Well-Trained Mind has similar recommendations as does Teaching the Trivium by the Bluedorns, ... ... the books out loud for his siblings' edification, but soon they were favorites we read for ourselves.
We also liked The Swiss Family Robinson and of course Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and Kidnapped. In fact, anything about adventures at sea fascinated us: Call It Co ... My memory is torn as to which came first between Swiss Family Robinson and Melville's Typee. One spurred a long-term interest, the other fed it. ... House on the Prairie series
