    I think I like all the books in His Dark Materials for different reasons--but The Subtle Knife definitely does have the qualities of both other books to a certain extent, and of course it ends on a suspenseful note rather than a concluding note of conclusion.

    After reading The Subtle Knife I decided that I would leave in our library but I would not recommend to anyone who isn't a mature sixth grader who is already reading a lot of similar fiction. It really isn't for younger children but is definitely YA and up.

    7. The Subtle Knife. Like The Golden Compass, I felt like I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have, and I'm not sure why.
